The North Country Chronicles – When Diversity is NOT our Strength.

When I was a criminal investigator, I had the pleasure of working with a sociologist on staff. I learned a lot from him about human interaction at the group level. I had a firm grounding in personal psychology, but crowd psychology is very different.

These groups develop their own group culture. My sociologist colleague once told me, “I could never say this at my college, but SOME CULTURES JUST SUCK.”

He firmly believed that all cultures are not created equally, and unhealthy cultures should not be absorbed into ours.

Thousands of years of history bear this out.

No culture can withstand dilution by other cultures that oppose the host’s mores.  The Roman Empire is the clearest example and current parallel for the United States.

When I was a child, we were taught about the Great American Melting Pot. Where all people came, adopted our culture, and we benefited by adopting those things that were GOOD about that culture- food, music, style, a catchy word or phrase – but the BAD things from that culture were left in the Old Country.

For 200 years this worked.

By taking the BEST that these other cultures had, we made our own culture STRONGER. It was in the late 70’s early 80’s that the message began to change. We started lowering our standards. We started hyphenating, African-American, Asian-American, Latino-American.

The start of Hyphenation was the start of the deliberate diminution of the Greatest Republic and Society the World has ever seen. Assimilation became a dirty word. Done by design.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”  – Teddy Roosevelt

This is not about the race you were born from, but the culture you learn or choose, to follow.

In the Southern half of the State, the small town feeling is gone. The sense of community is going. So many people moved in from other places, bringing their own culture, that the traditional New Hampshire only exists outside the large towns and cities. In the small towns. Even Conway is almost unrecognizable from 20 years ago. Above the gap, the culture of friendliness, openness, and Brotherhood still thrives.

I pulled over to switch CD’s(yes, I’m old school)the other day. Before I could decide between LedZep or Maynard Ferguson, a guy pulled over and asked if I needed help!

Only above the Notch!
