Walt Havenstein is confused.

On WMUR’s Close Up this past weekend, with regard to Medicaid Expansion, NH gubernatorial candidate Walt Havenstein said…

“We have to fix that. …I don’t want to kick it down the road…come January 2017, under our current law, that program is going to sunset, that means a lot of people who started off in that program are going to not have that benefit. We can’t have that.”

But just a month ago, at the Belknap County Republican Committee Meeting, Mr. Havenstein was asked about this and Walt (can I call you Walt?) told a room full of Republicans that he would Veto Medicaid Expansion.

No, not trying to go all Drudge, but face it, all we’ve heard from the Obama and his Administration was 1) No, Ebola will not come to the US (2 weeks later, er…), 2) Trust us, we got this (and then got surprised by the late Mr. Duncan who brought it to Dallas and just walked about for a while).  So a couple of headlines from Lucianne.com caught my eye and I could only shake my head – do they give you the warm and fuzzies that this Administration is 1) actually has been telling us the truth and 2) are going to let the US get WAY caught behind because the Obama Administration doesn’t do “leading from the front”?

Speaking in a video message to residents of West African countries currently experiencing outbreaks of Ebola, President Barack Obama dispensed advice on how residents can avoid the disease, including: “You cannot get it through casual contact like sitting next to someone on a bus.”

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising Americans who travel to the Ebola-stricken nations to “avoid public transportation.”

I watched this yesterday and George Will (his words above) absolutely nailed it – those that believe everywhere they look are nails for their Government hammer.  One entity cannot do everything, and it certainly can’t do everything well.  Look at the news that HP is about to split itself into two parts – far larger than almost all other tech firms, its leaders understand and have made the hard decision that smaller is better and that a more tightly focused view of things will yield a better chance for excellence.  Yet, Government is the exact opposite – even as its problems and its seamy side increase, the only answer is “give us more!” – more money, more heads, and more intrusion into everybody’s business.

George continues:

“Government is not competent. Frankly it’s not competent under Republicans or Democrats because it is always a monopoly and monopolies are not disciplined by market forces that are connected with reality. Teasing this segment, you asked “can we have faith in government?” I think we have much more to fear from excessive faith in government than from too little faith in government. You asked “can we trust the government to do its job?” What isn’t its job these days? I’ve just made a list. It’s fine-tuning the curriculum of our students k-12, monitoring sex on campuses, deciding how much ethanol we should put in our gas tanks, it’s designed our lightbulbs, and it’s worried sick over the name of the Washington football team.
