…Democracy Spring, which is currently in the midst of a 10-day protest march from Philadelphia to DC, with plans for a major escalation in DC on April 11. On that date, the group says it is plotting “one of the largest civil disobedience actions in a generation.” As of this writing, 3,404 activists specifically pledged online to participate in the main civil disobedience event and risk arrest on on April 11 in D.C.

I try to make the rounds of the NH newspapers; this morning at the Concord Monitor I came across a Letter to the Editor from someone who definitely doesn’t understand his civics (emphasis mine):

Letter: Cheated by Ayotte, GOP

Sen. Ayotte was recently quoted as saying she believes “the American people deserve to have a voice in the direction of the court.” That was code for her position that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is right to not even consider President Obama’s nomination of Judge Garland for a seat on the Supreme Court until a new president is elected.

That’s all fine and dandy, but what about my vote? One of the reasons I voted for Barack Obama in 2012, and not Mitt Romney, is I wanted Obama, not Romney, to nominate the candidates to fill any Supreme Court vacancies that occurred during the following four years. I feel cheated by Sen. Ayotte and her Republican colleagues.

Perhaps the executive branch should stop using tax dollars to fund the current expenses of the U.S. Senate, on the assumption that the Senate elected in November will be more responsive to its constituents.

That wafts up the next pungent rhetorical fog flatulated from the dishonest Left to inflate their spurious “The court ruled that corporations are people” blimp so they can float it high as some looming ominous evil casting a shroud of doom over all we hold dear.  This is of course silly.  To pretend otherwise, betrays either dishonesty or ignorance.

Corporate Personhood otherwise contorted into the “Corporations aren’t people!!!” freakout.

Now without really thinking about it, if someone asked, “Are corporations people?” Many brows would furrow accompanying an answer like, “No, absolutely not.” Or “Well, I’m not sure.” Or “Maybe”. If one of the latter two is your answer and the person asking fits the hysteric I described at the beginning, step back before uttering the answer  or duck.

Let’s put this plainly and clearly. What the progressives are high-chair pounding about in their reworded phrase is Corporate Personhood.  Corporate Personhood has been around since the 1800’s and is a part of Corporate Law. And before suspecting sinister machinations by corporations and scheming barons consider that without Corporate Personhood a corporation cannot be sued, cannot be taxed, cannot enter into contracts, cannot own property etc. Because if it is not a person, what legal entity is it? I know I’ve put this kind of thing up before but I just can’t stop thinking that we are seeing yet another slow motion crash / cave in with the Republicans.  Yes, McConnell and Ayotte have said no deal, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this two-bit rodeo show and it always ends the same way.  The Hill reports (emphasis mine, reformatted):

Sen. Kelly Ayotte will meet with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland next week.  

The New Hampshire Republican plans to meet with Garland on April 13, according to her office, even though she thinks the Supreme Court seat should remain vacant until next year.   “I will meet with the president’s nominee out of courtesy and respect, and I also plan to explain my view that the people should have a voice in this important nomination through their votes in November,” Ayotte said in a statement.  She told reporters in New Hampshire during the Senate’s two-week recess that her office had set up a meeting with Garland, though she wasn’t sure when it would be.

What is it about Citizens United and Corporate Personhood that crumples, bunches, and tucks deep the underwear of so many progressives? Why the foot stomping screaming spasms? It’s difficult to get a solid understanding of what exactly vexes them so because very often merely uttering the inquiry unleashes a torrential response of vacuous slogans wrapped in anger.  “Corporations aren’t people!!!”, “The rich are buying the government!!!”, “Too much money in campaigns!!!”, “It’s ruining our Democracy!!!”. None of that is helpful. So I thought I’d look into Citizens United and try to figure it all out.

Now I understand the state of the person in which I notice this behavior isn’t conducive to reading or edification—it’s more conducive to a dyspepsia fueled aneurysm. But one would think if a person finds something so discomfiting they’d learn more about it before completely flipping out. Sadly, I don’t believe most progressives know much about either Citizens United or Corporate Personhood, at least the ones who sound off about it with snide drive-bys and sneering eye-rolling. I am sure, however, there are progressives who do know the truth about Citizens United and Corporate Personhood, but the distortion is too luscious a propaganda tool to waste. Those are the progressive rousers who prefer firing up a cauldron of civilizational discontent and ladling out dishonesty to the indoctrinated and others who thirst to justify their resentments.

Yup, another Sunday, another CloseUP and this week, Josh McElven had US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (or better described as the Federal Government’s Ambassador to New Hampshire) and perhaps Candidate-To-Be Rich Ashooh for US Congress in CD-1 (he formally announces tomorrow).  She said a couple of things that caught my ear so I figured, per normal, to add my thoughts.

That said, you can see that I started to manually do the transcription (the lower case) but today I saw that WMUR provided one.  Well, they SAY that do but I found that it SUCKS.  You can tell because I left theirs in UPPER CASE and I filled in with lower case.  Ya’d think a multi-million if they were going to do transcripts, WOULD DO TRANSCRIPTS!

In the second third of CloseUP, Rich Ashooh did his pre-announcement announcement for US Congress in CD-1 and challenging Frank Guinta, the incumbent.  We covered Rich back in 2010 when he ran the first time and I guess the interactions I had with him were favorable – I started calling him “Gentleman Rich” as he was always the perfect gentleman.  It will be interesting to see how this goes – and I wonder if his entrance into the race had anything to do with Dan Innis’s rather quick exit from it.

Anyways, he got the same question about the opiate problem here in NH that Jeanne Shaheen did.  But first McElven asked him about the current political climate – and I thought his answer a bit curious:
