Isn’t the NH Republican Party Supposed to Stay Out of Primaries? [Updated]

Chris Sununu signing up to run for a third term

The NHGOP sent out an email today. The focus is Governor Chris Sununu signing up to run for a third term as Governor. In the press release, Republican Chair Steve Stepanek hopes that “Governor Sununu will lead New Hampshire Republicans to great success this November.” But Mr. Sununu has a primary challenger.

Noted pro-family Conservative Republican Karen Testerman will file today to challenge New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. Franklin City Councilor, former Merrimack County Republican Chair and radio host, Karen says, “enough is enough. It’s time to make New Hampshire Free Again.” The founder of the family, faith and freedom organization, Cornerstone Policy Research, claims that “every family member who brings home a paycheck is essential. The Governor is drunk with power …he picks and chooses who should open and micro manages what procedures must be followed.”

I’d like very much to see great success for Republicans this November but if I remember correctly, and I do, the party is not supposed to pick sides in a primary. To clear that up, or at least confirm the real intent, or if it was an oversight, I have emailed NHGOP vice-Chair, Pam Tucker.

I also sent a message to Karen Testerman requesting a response from her campaign. [Update – Karen responded].

I am looking forward to the NHGOP press release announcing my candidacy as well since the State Committee is to remain strictly neutral in any Republican primary contest as per State Committee By-laws*. Meanwhile, I look forward to engaging in spirited discussions with the Governor over his style of governance

*Article II:Section 1 of the The NHGOP By-laws. “No officer of the State Committee …, shall participate in any primary contest on behalf of any candidate for a Republican nomination. They shall remain strictly neutral in any such primary contest.”

No comment from the NHGOP yet, but I will update this article or write a follow up if and when that is available.

Here’s the NHGOP Press Release.
