Net metering is a euphemism for forcing electricity providers to purchase excess electricity generated by Solar at the retail rate (not the lower rate that it would cost the electricity provider to produce the electricity itself).
Solar … and other so-called “renewable” energy … are NOT alternatives to fossil fuels. At this point in time, they can only supplement fossil fuels. So, if you install Solar, for example, you must remain connected to the grid because there are such things as nighttime and cloudy days and shade. At times, Solar generates more electricity that can be used/stored. Net metering is … as noted at the outset … the euphemism for forcing electricity providers to purchase a portion of this excess AT THE RETAIL RATE (not the lower rate that it would cost the electricity provider to produce the electricity itself).
Needless to say, the additional costs of purchasing electricity at the retail rate are passed on to consumers that don’t utilize Solar, while the Solar consumers receive a credit (at the retail rate) on their electricity bills. In other words, net metering forces electricity consumers to pay higher rates in order to subsidize Solar.
Net metering is “capped” … that is, a limit is sent on how much electricity the electricity providers are forced to purchase from Solar … because the more the electricity providers must purchase from Solar the higher the rate the electricity providers much charge non-Solar consumers.
The bill in question is particularly egregious because it forces electricity consumers … the vast majority are working-people … to subsidize Solar for businesses and local governments.
Three so-called Republicans voted for this GREEN PORK legislation: John Reagan, Harold French and JEB BRADLEY.
This is yet another example of Bradley channelling his inner-Democrat. Perhaps not as brazenly as his support for Obamacare, but consistent with his support of another form of Green-Pork: biomass plants.
