Gun Control: ” The policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence.”

What do Global Warming and Gun Control have in Common? The assertion that the so-called solutions have anything at all to do with the supposed problem.

Even if the Climate Cult’s Global Warming narrative were real, there’s zero evidence that the so-called solutions would work. Unless by work you mean divert billions annually from productive purposes into the hands of politicians and bureaucrats.

With guns, it has never been about public safety. It is about protecting a ruling class that plans to shake you down for things like global warming – which is a redistributive economic policy hiding behind a global fear-campaign.

A close examination of anything, perhaps everything, proposed by the progressive political class works the same way. So, when a researcher investigating the issue of gun crime discovered this herself, it was like the busting up of any paradigm. She was astounded.

Leah Libresco, writing at the Washington Post notes that,

Before I started researching gun deaths, gun-control policy used to frustrate me. I wished the National Rifle Association would stop blocking common-sense gun-control reforms such as banning assault weapons, restricting silencers, shrinking magazine sizes and all the other measures that could make guns less deadly.

She supported the sorts of laws New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu just vetoed. But by the time she was done with her research, she realized, they didn’t (and wouldn’t) do any of things proponents claimed.

We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

Leah’s piece is interesting, and you should read it. The research addresses a few common fallacies promoted by gun control advocates from the perspective of a statistician. But it leaves out things we’ve tried to emphasize.

The goal of the shepherds of gun control if not their sheep has never been about saving lives. As I noted here,

“…why would Democrats say these laws will make New Hampshire safer when they know it will be the opposite? Because they are not taking your rights away to make you safer. They mean to take away a good deal more. If you are disarmed, they’ll feel a lot safer when they do it.”

There is no policy prescription from the left that does not increase the power and scope of the ruling class to the detriment of the rights or fortunes of those they intend to rule. Nor will you find, even if you are a statistician, that the benefits of any one of them or even all of them outweigh the costs.

The only real benefit of any left-wing policy is the expansion of state power because, at their root, they serve no other purpose.
