MD Gov. Larry Hogan Will Not Challenge Donald Trump for the Republican Nomination

Governor Larry Hogan is very popular in Maryland. As a registered Republican this may have gone to his head. For most of the year, there’s been a buzz about him following Bill Weld into the Republican primary challenge fire.

I wrote about it (briefly) here.

No use hiding it, right? The likely Never-Trump ‘Republican’ challengers are not better than Biden. Sure, Larry Hogan (if he runs) is a home run for Republicans in Blue-Maryland, but in Texas, he’s a Democrat who’d be competing with Biden for the same voters. Bill Weld as well.

Hogan has huge upsides for Maryland. He’d be a significant improvement in any blue State. But where else, at least against Mr. Trump? That is likley why he has decided not to challenge Trump in 2020.

Today, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) put to rest chatter that he was considering challenging President Donald Trump for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination. Hogan announced his decision in an interview with the Washington Post‘s Robert Costa.

“I’m not going to be a candidate for president in 2020,” said Hogan.

It could be that much like Governor Sununu not challenging Jeanne Shaheen; Larry’s taking a lap has as much to do with what his wife wants as anything else. Smart man.

Hogan added that he had discussed the possibility of a presidential campaign with his family, and his wife had encouraged him to stay focused on Maryland.

Sound familiar? I think he married the right woman.

But Hogan is eyeing 2024. He’s curious about how that the Post-Trump presidency will look. He has also started another one of those ‘can’t we all get along’ advocacy groups.

In addition to his gubernatorial duties, Hogan will launch an advocacy organization called “An America United” this week, which he described as attempting to “transcend partisanship” and find issues both political parties could support, like infrastructure improvements.

I think we can all agree that Democrats want to spend more money on “infrastructure.” But can we agree that it will not be in any way that will “improve” the infrastructure more than the government? And so the problems begin.

H/T to Gov. Hogan for battling (into remission) non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Whatever you decide to do politically we wish you the best for your health and continued recovery.
