Mitt Romney: Like Having to Take Your Cousin to The Prom

Mitt Romney - All things To If this running for president thing doesn’t pan out, Willard ‘Mitt’ Romney could probably get a gig as the new spokesman for Pork; The other white meat.  And I don’t mean political pork.  I’m referring to the "not Mitt" mentality that continues to surround the GOP primary process.  Romney continues to fare well, and if nothing else polls consistently, but he is the Republican voters guy-who-can-beat-Obama candidate of last resort.  He’s the backstop candidate where the ball ends up if no one else gets a hit.

And Mitt was looking good until Governor Rick Perry announced and proceeded to suck all the wind out of the race.

As Perry stumbled around on the national stage Herman Cain climbed up to the number one spot.

While Cain works out his alleged and unofficial "dating" history Gingrich is now favored among the conservative base and not because he’s necessarily the best conservative but because he is a fighter and…he’s not Mitt Romney.

You see the pattern.  Anyone but Mitt, please.

Yes, I can hear Senator Rick Santorum rubbing his hands together hoping he’s the next "Not Mitt."  And maybe he will be.  No one is perfect but he’s more conservative than most of this crowd if you ignore stiffing Pat Toomey for Arlen "it’s easy to switch" Specter.   I’d take Santorum over Romney.  I’d take almost anyone over Romney.  And I’m in in very good company.

The major theme, if ever a primary were to have such a thing, seems to be that the GOP will accept Romney as the nominee and as President–mostly because they’d take a lawn gnome over Obama at this point.  We’d certainly hear a lot less often from the lawn gnome.   They’d settle for him.

Sure, he’ll be better than Obama on judges, cabinet posts, the jack-boot of bureaucracy in general, and I’m reasonably sure he’d send the Czars back behind the iron curtain of academia, but it feels a lot like taking your cousin to the prom.  He’s Romney, the other white meat.

I’m not waiting around for the media to pick him for us and I know most of you are not either, but if that is the hand we are dealt so be it.  Obama must not be allowed to win, if for no other reason than that we are one Supreme Court Justice away from an unarmed superstate.  But does it have to be Romney?
