The Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire Endorses Rep. Bill O’Brien for Speaker of the House

The position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Free State of New Hampshire is one of the most important political positions in our state, second only to the governorship itself. The Speaker is generally one of the leaders of his or her political party in the state, and very much helps guide the party from a philosophical standpoint as well as being a legislative tactician. This is why it’s such an important position.

Rep. Bill O’Brien, out of the town of Mont Vernon, is the state representative destined to take that position. Accordingly…

…the RLCNH has just mailed out the following letter to every Republican running as a candidate for the NH State House. Those who prevail over their Democrat opponents will join the emerging GOP majority in New Hampshire, and will vote to elect a new Speaker of the House in Concord. There are many reasons they should vote for Rep. Bill O’Brien, for whom I have great respect and admiration. The letter that follows
details some of them….

There is a civil war going in the Republican Party. There are those who are creating a new, vibrant GOP animated with Common Sense Conservative ideas, and those who want to continue the weak and unreliable Republican Party of yesterday.

Over the past months and years, we at the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire (RLCNH) have been fighting for a return to traditional Republican values—low taxes, small government, individual responsibility, and free enterprise. Some in the GOP party leadership at both state and local levels have tended to ignore these values in recent history. But we know that these Common Sense Conservative ideas are the only way to regain the integrity of our Party and return our State to freedom and prosperity.

For those Republican candidates who are successful in their bids to become state representatives, they will be faced with the decision of which Republican to support for Speaker of the House, one of the most powerful political positions in our state. There are two announced candidates. One is a gentleman who has served in the past loyally and with distinction. But he is  “yesterday’s Republican”—an advocate of the “go-along, get-along” attitude that has made the GOP little more than a weak reflection of the Democrats in the past.

The other candidate for GOP Speaker of the House is William L. O’Brien, representative from Mont Vernon. Mr. O’Brien has the necessary skills and the commitment to Common Sense Conservatism to lead our Party and our State back to liberty and prosperity. As Co-Chair of the House Republican Alliance for the past several years, he has led a large group of legislators—and influenced the entire Republican delegation—to remain true to the state Party platform.
He is also a canny and tenacious New Republican strategist who can guide the NHGOP to legislative victories that will heal the damage the Democrats have inflicted on our state over
the past four years.

We urge all Republican state representatives in the strongest terms to vote for Bill O’Brien for Speaker of the House when they get their chance. We need a new breed of Live Free or Die Republicans to put New Hampshire back on a solid, Common Sense Conservative footing. Rep. Bill O’Brien is that man. I’ve been political my entire life, starting out with Barry Goldwater and The Conscience of a Conservative in the1960's. In 1967 I enlisted in the U.S. Marines for four years, spending nearly two of them in South Vietnam. In 1972 I was a Florida presidential elector for Prof. John Hospers, the first Presidential candidate of the national Libertarian Party which was founded that same year. During the late 1970's and into the 1980's I was a contributing editor and monthly columnist for Reason magazine, and I’ve authored numerous articles in the print and online media about various subjects relating to individual rights and personal freedom. Today I'm a lawyer by profession; I divide my time between New Hampshire and Florida all year long, spending much of my time practicing law in Florida. As an early supporter and past member of the board of directors of the Free State Project, I was drawn to the Live Free or Die state of New Hampshire in late 2003 when it was chosen by a vote of the first 5,000 FSP participants. In 2004 I founded the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire, and continue today to work within the state political system to advance the traditional NH values of frugal small government, low taxes, small business, free enterprise, and self-responsibility. To all, I say "Come and see what we are building in the beautiful, healthy, livable Free State of New Hampshire!"
