Democratic vice presidential nominee took time out from campaigning against WalMart to stop here in the Lakes Region of NH over the weekend. A report from the Citizen newspaper provides some details of the probable presidential candidate’s visit. First up, global warming (at least I think that’s what he was talking about):
He began by commenting on the recent heat wave. "I have to admit," said Edwards, "this is not the New Hampshire weather I remember."
Add another politician willing to use even the weather to pander to people’s fears. It’s very hot, so therefore it must be global warming. I’m sure that if it was abnormally cold, that would be because of global warming too. What’s more depressing is that people buy into this stuff delivered in such an outwardly phoney fashion. This is not the NH summer weather I remember either- it’s usually way too short and generally sees rain from Friday till Sunday evening. This summer has been a banner year for pool use and outdoor festivities. Leave it to uptight politicians to "rain on the parade." Won’t someone ask Edwards to recount (for those of us who aren’t as intimate with NH as he apparently is ) what the NH of his memory used to be like?
In addressing a question about his lack of experience in foreign policy, Edwards said that he has been in Lebanon, only feet away from the battlegrounds. He said that is also going to China next month as well as to Africa in the fall. The senator continued by saying that while he has been criticized about his knowledge of foreign policy, he has a clear idea about what America should do in the world.
I guess if travelling the globe (as only politicians on junkets and rich millionaires can) qualifies as foreign policy "experience," then perhaps Paris Hilton would be more suitable leading America, given her many years of global travel. (Her hair is almost as nice as Edwards’ too.)
.
"If you really want our country to be looked up to, I think it is critical for the world to see the character of our people," said Edwards. "I don’t think they do see this. We need to let the world see our character. We need them to know that we do things other than in our self-interest."
I think America acting in its self interest is exactly what is needed. A person espousing the above touchy-feely approach in any position in our national government is exactly what is not needed.
.
I hope Edwards really does run for president. It will be great fun to watch his campaign flame out, as I don’t see regular folks warming to this slick, smarmy trial lawyer. "Central Casting" couldn’t do any better…
