She’s wrong on both accounts.  First, the Right to self-defense as embodied in the Second Amendment is not “granted” in the Bill of Rights, it was simply enumerated as being an existing Right that preceded the formation of the United States and was known to be a Right from God and Nature’s God simply by dint of being human.  “Granted” was never in their vocabulary. If a Right is “granted,” it can be taken away and they shuddered at the idea that they were creating a Hobbesian form of government.

She also, along with most Progressives, makes the error that “proper” history only starts the day before they were born – anything before that must not be relevant to the current day (fools that they are).

Steve took on the story of Portsmouth commercial fisherman Dave Goethel a while ago in complaining about overreaching and expensive regulations that were threatening to bankrupt small New England businesses:

A Federal Court has sided with the Government and NOAA in the ongoing effort to put local New Hampshire Fisherman out of business.

A group led by New Hampshire fisherman David Goethel sued the government over the rule change. The fishermen lost in federal district court and appealed. A 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel in Boston agreed with the lower court on Friday that the group didn’t file its lawsuit within a 30-day statute of limitations.

BE IT RESOLVED by the county convention of Belknap County, New Hampshire, that, pursuant to §399.14 (c) of the New Hampshire Laws of 1959, Chapter 399, as amended, the Gunstock Area Commission is hereby required to turn over to Belknap County, within 45 days after the close of each fiscal year, any sums accumulated and on hand at the end of the fiscal year in excess of twenty-five percent (25%) of the average gross income of the three (3) immediately preceding fiscal years, not required for the payment of outstanding bills or amortization of outstanding indebtedness; and this requirement shall be deemed to be a continuing requirement unless and until such time as this resolution is amended or revoked by a majority vote of the Belknap County Convention.

Wouldn’t it be great if NH schools had this outlook on who is responsible for what, and what the school’s boundaries are?  In the context of that question, I remind you that my soon-to-be daughter in law, while taking her teaching classes, was told by the professor “don’t trust the parents” – a theme I have heard AND seen a lot lately that seem to believe that OUR kids are really theirs via a collectivist outlook of “it takes a village” (so they belong to the village).

As Y’all know, I’ve been trying to better understand the RSAs (NH Statutes, especially RSA 32 and RSA 40 that govern Budgeting and Budget Committees) this past year.  Read the RSAs, talk with a couple of lawyers, talk with Legislators, talk with the Dept of Revenue Administration – I learned that our BudComm was not obeying the RSA that said that we SHALL do year-round budget oversight.  Well, being a programmer, I am the quintessential one – work really heard in order to “be lazy” later on (yeah, that second part never seems to come around but it’s nice to lie to ourselves once in a while).  So, instead of actually going to a meeting (time, my friends, time), I figured that automating it would be better – getting atomic level data at the GL account level, storing it off, creating both snapshots, time sequenced, and analytic results and then just send out the “run of the mill” and “anomaly” reports out automatically.

A state that is using the “death by a thousand cuts” in killing the Second Amendment Rights in their State has summed up the idea of no ID needed to vote here: 

Laws??  We don’t need no stinkin’ laws!  After all, they just put an illegal alien into a post in their State Government (reformatted, emphasis mine):

Lizbeth Mateo, an illegal alien and citizen of Mexico who came to the country with her parents when she was 14, is the first [illegal] undocumented person to be appointed to a statewide government job in the United States. The job, to serve on the California Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee, is an official government position that seeks to aid poor and “underserved communities” in gaining access to college. Mateo’s appointed was approved by the California Senate Rules Committee Wednesday.  In a statement, Mateo said illegal aliens are “underrepresented” in government. “While undocumented students have become more visible in our state, they remain underrepresented in places where decisions that affect them are being made.”

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1510, which bans most abortions after 15 weeks of gestation, on Monday in a closed ceremony attended by legislative supporters and abortion opponents…and was slapped with a lawsuit less than an hour later. The law and responding challenge set up a confrontation sought by abortion opponents [SIC – I think that should have been “future murderers – Skip], who are hoping federal courts will ultimately prohibit abortions before a fetus is viable. Current federal law does not.  Some legal experts have said a change in the law is unlikely unless the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court changes in a way that favors abortion opponents.

“We are saving more of the unborn than any state in America, and what better thing can we do?” Bryant said in a video his office posted on social media.

Note that line:  who are hoping federal courts will ultimately prohibit abortions before a fetus is viable. Current federal law does not. Once again we see the Left, having failed in the Legislative process, turn to the courts, packed with like minded judges, to have them rule “legislatively” from the bench.  What should be done is to rule on the letter of the law and what is actually written and not rule on words that aren’t there BY DESIGN AND PASSAGE and “rule in” words out of thin air.

At 2 1/2, he’s learning quick – he knows his way around TMEW’s iPad like nobody’s business.  It’s Sesame Street all the time – he’s in love (like many his age) with Elmo.  Elmo brushing teeth. He gets his own toothbrush out and brushes in time to the music.  And at one point, each and every time he watches it, Michelle Obama comes in view.  As I write this, he’s doing what TMEW noticed a bit ago…

Our freedom is not realized in the possibility that we might do anything, but in doing what we have said we will do. Human freedom is consummated in the voluntary self-limitation of the promise made and fulfilled. In the making and keeping of promises, we assert ourselves against the world and the future as acting agents, not mere reactive beings responding to circumstance. The power of oaths in legend, literature, and law is due to their assertion of free human choice and will within the cosmos.

As Hannah Arendt observed, it is the making and keeping of promises, along with forgiveness, that put an end to reaction and allow us to begin something new. Seen from this perspective, marriage vows are not an ending that establishes a static state, but a beginning that allows something new to flourish. In keeping our marriage vows, we renew our freedom and dignity as acting agents while uniting the two halves of the human race in a union that continues it.

That’s what I overheard a few years ago at our town’s Deliberative Session between two teachers who I later found out were union leaders.  OK, so they didn’t say that parenthetical phrase but as I have written before, the costs of our schools (all over the state) are far outstripping the growth in students.  Sure, some districts do have some population increases but most are not.  The upward costs are not being driven by those items that go directly to student – it is for ever-increasing teacher salaries.

I’ll ask: have you ever heard a union say “hey, we’ll take less because the kids need more paper, pens, pencils, art supplies, science supplies” and the like because it’s “for the children”?  I will say that I never have but certainly I’ve heard the kvetching from taxpayers (unless they or a family member are drawing a paycheck from said districts) lamenting that while THEIR take-home pay goes down (generally healthcare, taxes, et al) it always seems they have to pay more to make the teachers “whole”.  Fairness?  Nope – that’s what unions do – rent-seek from others beyond what they otherwise could do.
