Back in 2018, we posed a simple question. Was the University of New Hampshire taking strings attached funding from China? It has had a Confucius Institute for ten years, and in March of 2018, the CIA flagged them as foreign influence organizations.
With the protests in Hong Kong claiming scalps across the globe, this seems like a good time to remind you. The University of New Hampshire is still running what the CIA calls a Chinese foreign influence operation.
According to the CIA, the Chinese Communist Government is using Confucius Institutes at American Universities as foreign influence operations in the United States. UNH still has one.
The Confucius Institute funded UNH. There is a contract through 2024 or at least a payment that has been made through 2024. Has anyone seen the contract? Why did UNH get chosen to introduce the unregulated “Dear Colleague” Title IX letter in 2011?
If you pay a lot of money to attend college or university, you would hope that your professors might question their own claims and look at counter narratives so that you end up with a well-rounded education.
Right after the George Floyd protests, Alexander Prout posted a Tweet with a letter demanding reparations for black students at St, Paul’s School. He asked people to sign the letter. An alum posted under it that it was tied to China.
Chinese influence operations in American Education have focused primarily on Colleges and Universities. For example, after years of warnings, UNH ended its Confucius Institute in 2021 (UNH is still getting CCP grant money through 2024). But China has also invested millions in public schools.
There was much ado when UNH was finally forced to shut down its Confucius Institute. A partnership with the government of China that the Feds had long warned was likely a cover for intelligence gathering and the theft of intellectual property by the CCP.
The Hill has an Op-Ed advising all universities and colleges in the US to close Confucius Institutes. In light of the current concern over China’s activities in the US, the University of New Hampshire’s partnership with the Confucius Institute is worthy of another review.
