This week: a critical bill protecting women and girls is on the Governor’s desk — and she needs to hear from you.
Tell the Governor: Sign HB 1442 — Protect Women and Girls
The New Hampshire legislature has just sent Governor Ayotte another chance to protect the privacy and safety of women and girls. HB 1442 passed the House 181–164 and the Senate 15–8. After months of work by legislators on both sides of the building, the bill was amended to be essentially identical to SB 552 — permitting (not requiring) institutions to separate individuals by biological sex in locker rooms, bathrooms, sports competitions, and prisons.
When Governor Ayotte vetoed SB 552, she said the bill wasn’t “thoughtful and narrow” enough. HB 1442 is the answer to that veto. It is narrower than almost any similar law in the country — a permission, not a mandate. Schools, sports organizations, and prisons may protect the dignity of the women and girls in their care. They are not required to. It is hard to imagine a more limited response to a genuine safety concern.

“Hi, my name is [name], and I’m a New Hampshire resident calling to ask Governor Ayotte to sign HB 1442. This bill simply allows schools, sports organizations, and prisons to protect the privacy and safety of women and girls — it doesn’t require anyone to do anything. After the Governor’s veto of SB 552, the legislature responded with an even more limited bill. I hope she will sign it. Thank you.”
The Governor’s veto of SB 552 showed she did not hear enough from the NH women and girls this bill protects. This is another chance. Please call or email her office today.
