MACDONALD: Democrats Blame Trump for Chicago Labor Day Weekend Shootings

The Left is losing its hive mind over the number of shootings and deaths in Chicago over Labor Day Weekend. Headlines like fifty-three shot, seven fatally, pepper the Handmaiden media with little or no historical context.

Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez says,

We also have had many, many instances where the [Trump] administration has really escalated, exacerbated the violence in our country, in our inner cities. Trump is a dictator. I think we’ve got to be very clear. He’s trying to normalize violence. He is trying to normalize military deployment in American cities like L.A., D.C., Chicago, and many others to come. But what we have not seen is really a systemic investment that will actually address the core issues.

Does Señor López pay any attention to the violence in his city when Trump isn’t president? We do, and so do others. Here’s a look at the historical data for gun violence on Labor Day Weekend in Chicago

2024 weekend tally: 9 killed, 27 wounded
2023 weekend tally: 11 killed, 41 wounded
2022 weekend tally: 15 killed, 47 wounded
2021 weekend tally: 9 killed, 57 wounded
2020 weekend tally: 12 killed, 46 wounded
2019 weekend tally: 11 killed, 38 wounded
2018 weekend tally: 11 killed, 21 wounded
2017 weekend tally: 7 killed, 40 wounded
2016 weekend tally: 13 killed, 53 wounded
2015 weekend tally: 10 killed, 46 wounded

The average is eleven killed and forty-three wounded.

2025 had the lowest number of Labor Day weekend gun-related fatalities in Chicago since 2017.

The Chicago annual homicide trend, as of August 31st, is also the lowest it’s been in at least ten years, hitting 292, when the 8-month average of the previous decade is 454.

There were fewer shootings, wounded, and dead for the entire month of August as well, compared to the historical averages. It looks like crime and violence are down in Chicago since Trump was sworn into office.

There are also fewer shots being fired year to date, fewer wounded, and fewer fatalities in all of 2025 than the yearly average.

Democrat Projection

If we go back to Señor López’s remarks, we can clearly see what most of our readers will identify as Democrat projection. Chicago is still a war zone where decades of Democrat rule and reams of anti-gun laws have done nothing but escalate violence. Meanwhile, minions of progressive messaging have been spreading their chaos all across the nation, from riots and arson in LA to shootings at Catholic schools, all perpetrated by consumers of Democrat Party messaging.

Looking at Washington, D.C., where the President has authority to “manage,” Trump’s surge, the one Lopez bemoans, has even Mayor Bowser admitting (in very short order) that he has significantly improved the lives of Democrats in the District who are not street criminals.

The media isn’t prohibited from accessing historical data to challenge bombastic politicians making unsubstantiated claims. No one is stopping them from asking how Trump’s culture of violence somehow made Chicago safer.

We don’t expect them to, but we hope you will use these details to set the record straight in your ongoing groups and wherever you find the narrative appearing on social media. It really is up to us to keep them honest or make them look like fools.

That works too.
