At least I use my real name….

by Susan Olsen

All of us who blog at GraniteGrok expect comments on the things we write, hoping to engage folks in thinking, in discussion, in exchanging ideas.  There is only one rule at GG and that is whatever we write – and whatever commenters post – must be family friendly.  That means, if your children – or your mother, for that matter – came across GG, they should be able to read anything posted and not be offended.  Perhaps they might not agree with what each of us writes, but they should never be offended by bad language or offensive images.

So, as I’ve begun blogging with a bit more frequency, I seem to have caught the fancy of one of GG’s long-time commenters who goes by the handle  ‘IWKAGGP’, or as ‘he’ has come to be revealed, ‘Hunter Dan’ who purports to be a school teacher.  I’m taking him at his word that he is male but for whatever reason, he seems to have a real problem with me, and not just with what I write.  From “IWKAGGP -

You can’t burp a zygote. You can’t put diapers on a zygote. You can’t breastfeed a zygote. You can’t potty train a zygote. Your comparison is “apples and oranges.”” To “IWKAGGP -  Her hair looks different in every picture”.

Thank the good Lord he didn’t pick up on my last year’s little Prada shoes!

More than anything, he was merely a bit of fluff, trying to make what he wrote sound like he really believed it.  But a week or so ago, he took issue with an article Grokster Steve wrote about home schoolers.  Then I put up this comment:

I actually am starting to feel sorry for you. You don’t seem to realize that you are the sad little minion of a heartless and hostile, tax-exempt, shareholder-less, private corporation that has been given a stranglehold monopoly over public education. You get to keep your little job because you tithe to them; they get to keep their monopoly because so many other sad little minions like you who need to keep their jobs also tithe to them and fund the political money laundering operation that perpetuates their monopoly . Check their 990 over at Guidestar.org. Poor Dan….I’ll bet they don’t pay you a quarter mil…or even a quarterly dividend. Oh wait, they don’t pay dividends because they don’t have shareholders.

To which he replied:

Silly Suze . . . you must think that the public sector is supposed to run exactly like the private sector. When we all know that’s not true. Private Sector = supposed to make a profit. Public Sector = not supposed to make a profit.”

I answered – now understand that this man is teaching children -

Now I officially feel sorry for you…Public sector monopolies are not non-profit, they are simply exempt from paying taxes of any kind. If they didn’t take in more money than they spent (that delta known in the real world as profit), they would cease to exist. You poor pathetic, sad little man.”

His reply:

Not poor – rich in what counts. Not pathetic – have lots of friends family, etc, etc. Not sad – check out the survey of what professions make for the happiest people. Not little – 6’2″, 210 lbs, for starters. Try again Suze. Goodbye GraniteGrok.’

And for 8 whole days, silence.  Until today. He commented on a article in the Concord Monitor about Warner’s town meeting:

Hunter_Dan wrote: “Are you kidding me?!?!” That someone (or rather, that NOBODY) who shouted this Joe Wilson-esque taunt at the town meeting was none other than Susan Olsen, aka “Suze” from the GraniteGrok blog. Suze – a rather butch-looking old “lady” – is your typical garden variety ultra-conservative, Ayn Rand worshipping, selfish, anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, anti-conservation, anti-public education nutjob.”

Poor ‘Hunter_Dan’, this alleged school teacher either failed to read or simply failed to comprehend the Concord Monitor’s Discussion Guidelines:

You may not post content that degrades others on the basis of gender, race, class, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual preference, disability or other classification. Epithets and other language intended to intimidate or to incite violence will not be tolerated.”

I’m thinking it was ‘butch’ that got his comment removed:

Buh bye

Buh bye

heh…To think I outweigh Hunter Dan by about 30 pounds…He has to eat more Wheaties..Lift a Few More weights…Can’t go around looking like a Nancy boy all your life.

A teachable moment! Unfortunately, these days, very few teachers are worldly wise, or indeed wise at all, outside of their narrow subject matter and their narrower philosophical orthodoxy.
Pity indeed: A man who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool, shun him! (from a Persian proverb)

Sad to say this is a person (Dan) teaching our future.
He at least on the Grok serves as a bad example.
      remember the old saying:
“Those that can Do Do and those that can’t Teach”!!

standard for the left don’t you think. Engage in argument until it doesn’t go your way then smear. No surprise really. BTW, I happen to like short hair on a woman :)

  • Scott Morales

I echo Eric. It reminds me of Jonah Goldberg’s quip, “to the left, a fascist is any conservative winning an argument”. He’ll pound on his high chair, call you names, and then disappear to a dark corner and weep when no one is looking. Ya have to remember he’s a music teacher (i.e., expendable and not necessary– keep in mind this is coming from a person with a bachelor’s in music lol). There’s a lot of baggage being a musician, let alone a failed one. Do you think he set out to teach or do (i.e. perform, compose)? He can’t “do” the do, so he teaches. And is probably frustrated. Alas, as one of God’s creatures he too deserves our pity.

I think anyone who blogs should use their real name. I feel the same for commenting, though I accept that there are some people who have professional lives that might prohibit that. Using your own name brings with it a sense of responsibility and accountability.

But if you insist on playing at anonymity it would be wise to make that handle untraceable to you. Though we bloggers love it when you don’t. It is how we traced down Surf Kahuna DickNH at DES, and Dan WIlliams, aka Hunter Dan. aka IWKKKGGPP or something, has long been a known quantity who should just use his own name and deal with it.

-NH Steve, who has his blog picture next to his disqus log in name so you know it’s him.

I concur, we are adults and decorum is a must if we are to have any meaningful dialog. Using your real name also backs up ones convictions!

      • Daniel Joseph

I concur also, I like Susan’s hair. I mean we should use our names. Unlike wKKK blogger. Would it be except -able to use our given name, or family name? Maybe our Christian or authors name, I,m not sure how this would be received.

All will be revealed … some day:

Which is why I have always used my name – er, at least the nickname (shortened since childhood) as most people know me by that rather than by my given Christian name.

That said, as with the political pamphleters (sp) of the Revolutionary times, I have always allowed anonymous commenters as well as guest posts – and I always will. Steve, you are right for those that can’t for one reason or another. We encourage folks to use their own names, but we give people the Freedom to decide for themselves. After all, one size does NOT fit all!

We should all thank Danny-boy, the Flautist from Hillsburro, everyday because he is such a shiny example of why government skools should become subject to the Democratic mantra of choice and diversity.

I got a question to my fellow Groksters. Because I love the Grok and I also love a good debate I would love to see Hunter Dan return to the Grok forum and defend his honor. Because I believe that Conservatism and the Constitution are an far better product that what the liberals try to dish out than why not let the debate begin and let it begin here at the Grok? Would anyone have any reservation on allowing Dan to return, even though he said he was gone?

    • C. dog e. doG

Not my call, but I love to serve against government-issue skoolmarms and green backboards. Plus, sometimes Danny is right, sometimes he’s left; he exudes a certain je ne sais quoie. I have no idea where he stands on the proposed Gas Tax hike, and admittedly, I’m a bit curious.

It has never been a case of “allowing Dan to return” – he left on his own. I have only banned 2 people since starting GraniteGrok and the last one was 4 years ago. If he wants to comment here, the same rules apply.
