MACDONALD: “Why the Cold Winter is No Evidence against Warming”

My blushing Bride (of 32-years) and I were on our way to Market Basket (local grocery chain for the non-New England readers), and the recent week of warmer temps came up. Growing up in uppah-state New York, between Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes, every January, there was a week of warmer weather. Every year. Without fail. And we’d rejoice in what we called the January thaw. And then it would get cold as hell for six weeks, and snow was not just frequent but common.

She grew up in Massachusetts and recalls the same thing: after a cold October/November and a December that often felt like January minus the thaw, a few days of melt to help break up the ice in the driveway are a pleasant respite.

It doesn’t mean anything any more than the unusual cold in November/December, unless you are a climate freak with a Net Zero Now T-shirt (made cheap and possible thanks to fossil fuels) who can’t shut the F up about how communism will fix the weather.

Today’s lesson comes from the People’ Republick of Germany. Deutshland. Where the climate reichstag cut down ancient forests to make room for windmills and solar farms in the name of greening the planet, and then have to look the other way when German states fire up the mothballed coal plants, so good German citizens and a few million too many refugees don’t freeze to death.

Turns out you can’t burn solar and wind farms to keep warm when they are frozen or covered in ice and snow.

And while New England and bits connected to just experienced a January thaw, central Europe is frozen solid. Not to worry, though, that’s no evidence against warming. The global kind. You can still dance widdershins around burning Teslas and NOT talk about offshoring your emissions to rare-earth metals mining facilities that are poisoning the indigenous population. Or, how it is not greenwashing.

The article explains why severe winters in Germany do not contradict global warming. The core argument lies in the distinction between weather (short-term events) and climate (long-term trends). That of course gets ignored by the media when there’s a hot summer day.

Experts, the FR reports, emphasize that a single cold winter is merely a statistical fluctuation, while the global trend points upward. “Weather is what you see outside; climate is the statistics over a long period of time,” the FR reports. “A cold winter does nothing to change the long-term warming trend.”

WUWT author P. Gosselin rightly notes that the same rules do not apply on warm summer days, or in any case where “warming” of any sort above the average is experienced. But this is also a good time to remind the peasants that these are the people who laugh at the Bible and shout about how the earth is 4 billion years old, not 4000 (give or take a few millennia).

First, the Bible has more human truth in it than any Climate model or cultist emissions about human-induced “warming.” Second, your climate history comes up a lot shorter than that of “The Good Book.” If the earth is 4 billion years old, why is your climate history fifty years old (satellite age) and or selectively edited to justify the unassailable theories of Climate Quick Change artists?

Case in point: there’s been a lot of talk about Greenland, not just about how Mr. Trump intends to secure it for the United States. The Left has been using it as their coal-mine canary for sea level rise and catastrophic planetary doom. They zoom about in their fossil-fuel-plant-powered EVs, yelling, “The Ice Caps are Melting, The Ice Caps are Melting.”

The Greenland Ice Sheet is at least 500-600 meters thick. Arctic sea ice mass is above normal and has maintained volume for the better part of the past two decades. Parts of Northern Greenland, if you go far enough back, show evidence of a vast, lush arboreal forest with all the flora and fauna one would expect. And as few as 6-8K years back, absent any spittle-ehanced gesticulations about mammal flatulence or hatred for human flourishing made possible by fossil fuels, the Prudhoe Dome was 3-7 degrees C warmer than today.

Climate history matters so much that the Climate Cult can’t imagine much of it more than a few years prior to the invention of the modern faith-based exercise whose sole purpose was political science to redistribute wealth until there wasn’t any left anywhere for anyone but a few global elites.

So, while it is true that a cold winter is no evidence against the warming cult’s larger claims, neither is anything the warming cult says evidence of anything when measured against billions of years of climate, absent any of the evils they want to hoard for themselves at the expense of everyone else.

It is as much short-sighted, shoddy “science” as that which they claim to justify their own grant-related macular degeneration.
