…In the last quarter century, more than 1.25 billion people escaped extreme poverty – that equates to over 138,000 people (i.e., 38,000 more than the Parisian crowd that greeted Father Wresinski in 1987) being lifted out of poverty every day. If it takes you five minutes to read this article, another 480 people will have escaped the shackles of extreme of poverty by the time you finish. Progress is awesome. In 1820, only 60 million people didn’t live in extreme poverty. In 2015, 6.6 billion did not.

Data Point – It looks like the New Normal tax/regulation regime is starting to work

Despite President Trump’s tit-for-tat trade barbs, America’s CEOs are not wasting anytime in taking advantage of his tax reform plan. Over $300 billion was repatriated to the U.S. in the first quarter, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) — the most on record.

“U.S. firms that used to build their factories overseas in order to avoid U.S. taxes, they stopped in their tracks because of the tax bill, they are bringing all the money home,” said Kevin Hassett, chair of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers, during an interview on FOX Business’ Varney & Co. in June.

The BEA notes the main driver of the repatriation surge is that companies are no longer taxed on foreign earnings when returning the funds to the U.S. “We fixed that really, really stupid thing” said Hassett. By comparison just $38 billion was repatriated during the same period a year ago.

Data Point – Where are the Entrepreneurs?

Let me say right off the bat that I am no economist and would never even try to fake being one here on the ‘Grok.  That said, I see this chart as being extremely troubling.  Our traditional economics here in America has depended people, drawn to America on the idea that they too could make their own American Dream, that were willing to take that risk.  They knew and understood that while the risk to succeed meant great riches if they did indeed succeed, they could also nose-plant – yet took that risk anyways.

Some, being imprudent, failed to do the requisite homework, failed to calculate the risks, went ahead and risked it all anyways by starting up their business, and did the nose plant.  And yes, some did succeed despite themselves (re: anyone remember Pet Rocks?).  Most look, however, evaluate those risks and as this chart shows, have decided that the future is too unknowable to risk it.

Data Point: When the Government isn’t collecting the check for unions, guess what happens…

It seems that the Public Sector union members decide to tell the union leadership “Check’s in the mail!”.  Imagine that – for all of the bluster of “Solidarity Forever!”, “Workers standing side by side!” and “Mighty, Mighty Union!”, as soon as these Union Members have the Freedom to decide “er, SHOULD I send that check in, now that the Government isn’t TAKING it from me automatically”?

More than two years after Scott Walker’s showdown with organized labor in Wisconsin, the official numbers for the state’s public sector union membership are in — and they are down. Way down.

You betcha! American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 40:

  • 2011 – 31,730
  • 2012 – 29,777
  • 2013 – 20,488 now.
