Edited transcript:

Welcome to Wednesday, July 15th, 2026. Morning update.

Remember bird flu? Yeah. ⁓ Good times. How about ticks? One month, I think it was April. There were like three more ER visits reported to the CDC than any previous year, and ⁓ my god, it was Armageddon. May and June, well below both the trend and peak years. Ticks kinda went away.

Then it was Hantavirus. That didn’t last very long. And that was gone.

Then it was Ebola. No US cases. Nothing really exceptional either. We reported on that. There have been outbreaks with more cases in past years. And so, of course, we’re here to talk about that again. Cyclosporiasis. Maybe it’s cyclosporiassis.

Thirty-one states have reported cases in 2026, with 843 confirmed cases by the CDC in the United States so far. That number’s probably incredibly low because the state of Michigan says it has over 2600 cases. Maybe not confirmed, but at least reported. So my God, we have an outbreak. Do we really?

In 2018, there were 3,519 confirmed cases nationwide. In 2019, there were 4,703 cases nationwide.

Alright, I’ll admit it took me a little while to find this data. It doesn’t seem like anybody actually wants to report it, but apparently it’s out there. So we might have 3,500 cases already this year. That would make it the same as 2018. And I don’t remember seeing any reporting on it in 2018 or 2019. And then, of course, COVID came, and that’s all anybody talked about. So what about twenty twenty-six and cyclosporiasis?

Well?

Let’s hope they’re not using the PCR test to check for it. Hmm. That’s probably not gonna help much. But again, it seems like they’re just getting excited about the latest thing, the latest health crisis. People have diarrhea. It’s a non-fatal infection, by the way. Some people have been hospitalized for it, most probably for dehydration. But really, there’s just no there, there. Not yet anyway.

If it were in all 50 states and we had 20,000 cases, that might be something to talk about. But let’s kind of narrow down the possibilities here just a little bit. Historically, the primary source, excluding travel, is cilantro from Mexico. Bagged premixed salads. Cilantro and premixed salads.

The median age of infection? Forty-two. Primarily women. Sixty-two percent.

Cilantro, forty-two years of age, female. I’m thinking liberal women.

Which would at least explain the amount of attention it’s demanding.

That’s it for today. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
