PAGE: Truck Driver From India Serving Sentence in Vermont Fatal Crash

A Canadian truck driver convicted in connection with a 2023 fatal crash in Moretown remains jailed in Vermont, according to state records. Satnam Singh, 26, formerly of Brampton, Ontario, is serving a 2–3 year sentence imposed in April 2024 for grossly negligent operation resulting in a death. His minimum release date is listed as February 18, 2027.

The crash that killed 39-year-old Rosetta “Zetty” Weber of Waitsfield is among at least five accidents nationwide caused by truck drivers who are recent immigrants from India. Similar accidents in Canada have raised concerns north of the border.

Singh was living in Canada – apparently legally – at the time of the Waitsfield crash. He was arrested after his tractor-trailer crossed the center line on Route 100 and collided head-on with a Subaru driven by Weber, who died at the scene.

Singh, who was hauling bagged mulch to a Waitsfield hardware store, pleaded not guilty at arraignment but was later convicted and sentenced in April 2024.

Court documents published in the Waterbury Roundabout described witness accounts of erratic driving in the miles before the crash. Investigators later determined Weber attempted an evasive maneuver seconds before impact.

Singh had been living and working in Brampton, a rapidly growing Toronto-area city known for its large immigrant population and significant South Asian community. Indian-origin residents make up roughly 27% of Brampton’s population, according to Canadian census data, and the city has become a major hub for trucking companies that employ many newcomers with commercial driver’s licenses.

Ontario policies allow temporary residents with work permits to obtain commercial licenses, a system that has drawn Canadian media and government scrutiny following several high-profile truck-related crashes.

The Singh name is particularly well-represented in Northern India, including the Punjab, which, according to ABC News, has a thriving illegal-immigrant trade called “The Donkey Route.” Immigrants pay organized crime up to $100,000 per person to migrate to America. By some estimates, Indians comprise the second-largest illegal immigrant community by nationality, second to Mexicans.

The U.S. paused work visas for foreign truck drivers in August, in response to the high number of TT accidents caused by foreign drivers. Both legal and illegal immigrants driving trucks on U.S. highways come as a response to a national shortage of truck drivers. The trucking industry already faces a severe driver shortage, costing nearly $100 million in lost revenue each week.

Driver in fatal VT crash worked for California company

Singh worked for a California-based trucking company operated by a family member, according to court testimony. At the time of his arraignment, both prosecutors and the judge cited concerns about his ties outside the United States while setting bail at $150,000.

He remains incarcerated under a “sentenced with hold” status in Vermont’s corrections system.

Homeland Security reports other fatal/serious accident TT crashes with Indian drivers

ON Dec 1, DHS reported four tractor-trailer crashes, with death or serious injury resulting, caused by Indian-origin immigrant drivers, all classified by DHS as “criminal illegal aliens.”

DHS announced U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an arrest detainer for a criminal illegal alien charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangering after he killed two people in Deschutes County, Oregon while driving a semi-truck.

According to local reports, on November 24, 2025, Rajinder Kumar, a criminal illegal alien from India, jackknifed his semi-truck and trailer, blocking both lanes of U.S. Highway 20. A Subaru Outback collided with the semi-truck, tragically killing both the driver, William Micah Carter, andthe passenger, Jennifer Lynn Lower.

Rajinder Kumar

Kumar entered the U.S. illegally near Lukeville, Arizona on November 28, 2022, and was released into the country by the Biden administration. The illegal alien was issued a commercial driver’s license from Gavin Newsom’s California and given a work authorization in 2023 by the Biden administration.

Kumar is currently housed at the Deschutes County jail pending charges for criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangering.  Since Oregon is a sanctuary state, ICE said it will make all necessary efforts to bring Kumar into custody should he be released from custody.

A Homeland Security spokesperson blames Democrat leaders for inadequate training and licensing.

“Rajinder Kumar, a criminal illegal alien from India, was released into our country under the Biden administration and issued a commercial driver’s license by Gavin Newsom’s Department of Motor Vehicles. How many more senseless tragedies must take place before sanctuary politicians stop allowing illegal aliens to dangerously operate semi-trucks on America’s roads?” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

Also, ICE lodged an arrest detainer for a criminal illegal alien—Harjinder Singh—following his arrest for three counts of vehicular homicide while driving a semi-truck in Florida.

In August, ICE arrested Partap Singh, a criminal illegal alien from India, who caused a multi-car pileup while driving a commercial 18-wheeler in the sanctuary state of California. The accident left 5-year-old Dalilah Coleman with critical, life-altering injuries.

In October, ICE lodged an arrest detainer for a criminal illegal alien—Jashanpreet Singh—who killed three people in California while driving an 18-wheeler under the influence.
