School administrators are jumping on the SEL Social and Emotional Learning bandwagon. It may sound good, wanting to help children with their social and emotional needs, but what are children really learning?
One SEL program used in Merrimack, and other schools, is called Second Step. I wont go in depth on the data mining that takes place in SEL classes, instead I’ll show you what some of these SEL programs look like. Some parents are reporting an exorbitant amount of time their children are spending on SEL. That is something parents may want to look at. Exactly how much time are schools teaching SEL vs academics?
When you visit the Second Step Website, you need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to where you see that Second Step is brought to you by the Committee for Children. That doesn’t sound so bad but what is the Committee for Children?
In this article the Committee for Children ask: ” Are White LGBTQIA+ Leaders Doing Enough?” Sounds pretty political—I was not able to find any information for religious students on their website.
Andrea Lovanhill is the CEO of Second Step. They obfuscate their leadership, but the link from Second step to the CfC website can still be seen here and here.
They do make a commitment to the Anti-racist world view here, but what does it mean to be an anti-racist?
Newsweek reported that anti-racism is racism, here.
Antiracism Is Racist On Its Own Terms
Antiracists oppose capitalism. Ibram X. Kendi, perhaps the nation’s most prominent “antiracist,” says that “to truly be antiracist, you also have to truly be anti-capitalist.”
Jordan B. Peterson explains Why “Anti-Racism” Is the Worst Form of Racism
This worldview is not shared by many people, so should it be something that is pushed on children in a classroom? Second Step has made a commitment to Anti-racism.
Check your SEL budget, you may want to know how much you are paying for all of this.
