And the media does us a public service by providing details and updates, but as with all the other outbreaks of 2026, the tone seems misplaced.
The numbers change daily, but there are somewhere between 4,000 and 12,000 people in the nation of 330 million with cyclosporiasis. That’s 0.00036% who thought they were eating healthy but didn’t know their bagged greens were a product of Mexico, or that this is where nearly every one of these outbreaks originates. It’s not a collapse of the grocery supply chain or a failure of public health, but you’d think it was, which got me thinking.
On any given day, aren’t there probably more than 12,000 people, maybe in just your state, who have acquired some form of unplanned, food-borne, bacterial-induced diarrhea? No one put eyedrops in their whisky; they just ate something or touched something and boom. I suddenly have plenty of time to finish that book I started.

Perspective, I guess, is all I’m asking for, and no, we don’t want anyone getting sick or losing a fight with lower GI Joe. I have Ulcerative Colitis, and I wouldn’t wish that or anything like it on anyone. But the clickbait culture has turned everything into a story. Two, actually; I’ve dipped an editorial toe into this well twice now. To make fun of liberal women and to add context to the coverage [what you are reading now].
And I’ve been a bit hung up on these “outbreak” stories ever since the Wuhan Flu over the Medical Industrial Complex Cuckoo’s Nest. It is difficult not to, and that skepticism is healthy, as is its overflow into other areas. The fact that I was already a critic and observer helped (or didn’t, depending on how you want to look at it). And here we are.
Everything we’ve been told is suspect, which, as I have also observed, is the point. We have to remember that while we can pat ourselves on the back for being able to say our eyes are or have been opened, we must remember that the destruction of every institution is the progressive endgame. If enough people decide they can’t trust anything about anything, then the one thing we hold dear and strive to protect, the Constitutional Republic, becomes the whipping boy for all these failures.
The fact that the institutions that failed were never meant to thrive upon those foundations is made to appear irrelevant. Barnacles that once cleared would free the ship to sail more smoothly are instead the ship itself, and our populace may not generally be informed enough to make the distinction; also a deliberate failure that advances the progressive game.
I know, how did we get here from diarrhea? I’m not sure, but they are connected, and that’s a mighty strange trip to be on, but when that shit hits the fan, well – it’ll be all over, and it seems we are not one generation away but the next election away from finding ourselves in that unpleasant situation.
We’ve managed quite well considering how much is stacked against us, and it has so far only ever taken “an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”
But that works the other way as well, and we must remain vigilant, even in tenuous times where lettuce from Mexico has led so few of us so low.
