Cardello: Is The New York City Mayor’s Race The Democrat Party’s Future?

New York City is the largest in the United States, with a population of 10.2 million residents. I say residents because the count includes all illegals living in the Big Apple as of the last census. NYC has more people than 38 states and nearly as many people as all 6 New England states combined. Needless to say, running NYC is a big job and takes a strong leader. I am not sure there is such a person running for mayor of New York this year.

The leading candidates on the Left are a former disgraced governor, a Muslim Socialist, and the current Mayor, whose Party has rejected him because he is too aligned with Donald Trump, so he is running as an Independent. It is a sad place that NYC has come to that it cannot attract a better person to take the helm, or is this the best the Democrats have to offer?

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo focused his 2025 mayoral campaign on what he describes as a city in crisis. Cuomo argues the city feels unsafe and out of control because of poor leadership, and he believes his experience makes him the right person to fix these problems and bring the city back on track. Cuomo’s resignation in 2021 followed multiple investigations, primarily related to sexual harassment allegations, including inappropriate comments and groping.

Zohran Mamdani is a self-declared socialist with a focus on rent freezes, free bus rides, and no-cost childcare. He advocates for housing affordability and aims to redirect funds to public institutions like The City University of New York. Mamdani is known for his activism, including leading a hunger strike alongside taxi drivers. Mamdani’s goals would swell the current budget by 100%. Who cares about fiscal responsibility when you can offer free things to get votes?

Mamdani appears to have won the Tuesday primary, though it is not official yet. Cuomo has conceded. This result will make Sandy Cortez celebrate as she openly supported the Socialist candidate. This radical view may work in New York, but it will never get her elected beyond the House. Somehow, Cortez and fellow Socialist Bernie Sanders feel they are the pulse of the Party. We on the Right hope so, for it will spell doom for the Democrats if they go this far Left for a Presidential candidate.

Mamdani will have to get by Eric Adams. It is difficult for an Independent to win any election, but Adams is still popular with the people, if not the Democrat Party. He has come around on illegals and is cooperating with ICE to make NYC a safer city, so that it can regain its prominence. The city must go with Adams, as they cannot afford Mamdani financially or politically. This race will be a good barometer as to whether the voters recognize the need to move to the center and get back to the basics of America First, or if the promise of free goods and services is too big a temptation to resist.
