I Agree with the Techie…Leave No Door Unlocked

Yeah, curmudgeon here. When I was younger, I played around with X10 devices to create a “smart home” and all that. But when I saw this, I said “Yep, nope!”:

Smart House should be MY house without all the electronic peeping toms watching everything I do: vacuum cleaners, lights, thermostats, Alexa, Siri, and all the rest. Smart “stuff” – but only when they are hooked up to the Internet and having the ability to “phone home”.

Heck, I had to replace my fridge, microwave, and washer/drier several months ago. All the units are “internet ready” with their own apps. Yeah, nope. My cell phone is for me and my purposes – not yours. Let’s be honest, even with all the doo-dads they come with (sure, my clothes washer can talk to its brother, the clothes dryer about what’s coming in a few minutes), how often do you even NEED (not want, NEED) to use an app to turn it on? And for the stove that’s about to be bought (yep, gas…), I can only think of one feature that I might actually use is to tell the oven when to start when we’re on the way home.

And remember, what can go out can also unlock your electronic door (real or virtual) and come in. I have no intention of any outside entity (yes, Southern Poverty Law Center, I’m thinking about you right now) start playing with ANY of my devices.

Yeah, my devices, like the programmer/engineer above, have a good idea what will happen if I start hearing any undesirable peeps coming out of them.

You want to readjust them? YOU give them to me…

…oh wait, bad idea:
