Take Action to Stop NH Tax Dollars Funding Abortions

You may have seen in the news yesterday about a courageous effort by Rep. Jess Edwards (R-Auburn) and the majority on Division 3 of the House Finance Committee to stop our New Hampshire tax dollars from being used to fund abortions in this year’s state budget.

I received an email last night from Bob Dunn, Director of Public Policy at the Diocese of Manchester, explaining what happened and requesting action:

Friends –

This afternoon, Division 3 of the House Finance Committee (the subcommittee that handles the Health and Human Services aspects of the proposed state budget that is now under consideration in Concord) voted to pass an amendment to Section 34 of HB 2 (HB 2 is the so-called “trailer bill” that accompanies HB 1, the budget bill itself). This new amendment prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services from awarding state funds to abortion clinics except to the degree minimally necessary for the state’s participation in the Medicaid program, and it provides that no funds or contracts may be awarded to a state-funded family planning program unless that program is physically and financially separate from an abortion clinic.

We support this amendment:

  •  The payment of any public funds to abortion providers is contrary to the deeply held beliefs of the manifold numbers of us in New Hampshire who are morally opposed to abortion as the taking of innocent human life. No one should be compelled to support abortion through their tax dollars, and thus public funds should not be used for abortions.
  • To ensure that public dollars are not used for abortions, there should be a distinct separation between the abortions carried out in an abortion clinic and any other aspects of that clinic’s work.

The full House Finance Committee is expected to vote on HB 2 on Friday. We ask you to contact the members of the House Finance Committee before Friday to respectfully register support for the amendment to Section 34 of HB 2 as proposed by Division 3, regarding state funds paid to abortion providers. The contact info for the House Finance Committee is here.

Please take special note of the word “respectfully” in the previous paragraph. In any communications with legislators, especially on controversial issues like this, all of us who are Catholic citizens are obligated to pay heed to what St. Paul told the Colossians: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

Thank you for your help on this important issue.

Bob

Here is the email I sent to the House Finance Committee at HouseFinanceCommittee@leg.state.nh.us:

Representative,

Please support the amendment to Section 34 of HB 2 as proposed by Division 3, regarding state funds paid to abortion providers. Tax dollars that go to the NH family planning program should be used to fund family planning, not abortion.

Currently, abortion providers can use the funds from the family planning program to pay for the facilities, staff, supplies, and utilities for both the family planning services and for abortion. They should be required to move their abortion services into separate facilities with separate staff if they wish to continue receiving the family planning funding.

Thank you to Division 3 of the House Finance Committee for voting to pass this amendment. Please concur with Division 3 and vote to pass this amendment.

Sincerely,
Beth Scaer
