The Government Can’t Guarantee Anyone That They Will Never Get Sick

Red Flag Law State House

You are my Representatives, so I just wanted to advise you of an issue that is important to me. Governor Sununu has apparently just signed yet another extension to the state of emergency which is allowing him to continue to rule by executive order.

We want to thank Donald Scott for this Op-Ed. If you have an Op-Ed or LTE

I have been thinking that it is past time that there should be an end to this.

It is my understanding that you along with the rest of our legislature have the authority to make laws, even without his approval, if enough of you are in agreement, but that he does not have the ability to make laws without getting approval from the legislature.

This state of emergency has things backward and it is about time that he started working with the house of representatives and senate instead of assuming powers to which he is not entitled.

I don’t know how you feel about the virus, but I am in the over-65 crowd and still feel, especially after almost a year of this, that we should not be treated as if we have no common sense or consideration for other people.

I think we ought to be able to make our own health decisions as it has always been. Just getting out of bed in the morning is a risk and I really believe that most people are competent enough to manage their own risks.

Suppose that the covid virus is still hanging around in some form five years from now? Are we going to be looking at the 80th or 90th extension of the Governor’s state of emergency? It really has to stop sometime.

No matter how lenient or extreme the measures are, the government can’t guarantee anyone that they will never get sick. They never could and never will. Although some people seem to behave as if they think the government can do this.

Please help us by getting Governor Sununu to do his job and work with you and the rest of the legislature.

And also support common-sense measures as far as public health goes and not the heavy-handed, unproven, and largely ineffective policies we have all had to deal with for the past several months. I and a lot of others I know would really appreciate it.

Thank you and Happy New Year
