Dear Transgendered People,

There’s a letter header I never thought I’d be writing. Can we please have a conversation about this bathroom-bill stuff?

As a woman who was born female, and has always felt like a female, I know that I cannot possibly understand your life. At the same time, I really feel like the intention of recent legislation is being hijacked and distorted. Having read many of the House Bills passed through legislation, I don’t see them as the discrimination bills that they are being played out as in the media. I see them as protection bills for the general public, especially our most vulnerable.

The University of New Hampshire has a reputation…they constantly beg for more taxpayer money while blowing vast sums of cash on trivial crap. Case in point, the $17,570.00 custom table they just added to the Holloway Commons.

This architectural wonder is the newest addition to a $10.5-million-dollar renovation of a single dining hall on their Durham, New Hampshire campus. It’s Okay. It’s a light up table.

The title comes from Mark Steyn’s recent remarks regarding Frau Merkel’s lynching of comedian Jan Boehmermann, for making a joke about the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan didn’t like it. Merkel has set the German Shepherds courts on Boehmermann, and set whatever still passes for free speech in Germany on an even steeper downward slide into obscurity.

So Jan Boehmermann will be put on trial pour encourager les autres. As Barbara Amiel well understood, for every protracted expensive court battle that ends in a free-speech victory there are thousands and thousands of other publishers, editors, writers, comedians, film-makers, playwrights, directors, producers, cartoonists, artists who get the message that discretion is the better part of valour. They’re not hiding it anymore. Hillary Clinton will come after your guns if she elected. It’s not a hyperbolic scare tactic; it’s a promise. With Antonin Scalia no longer on the Supreme Court, they smell the stench of an anti-constitutional opportunity and they’re going to seize it, taking to it like a pig to a fly swirling slop. They’ll tilt the court further away from the Constitution and Rule of Law and towards arbitrary caprice.

Kimberly has a post here in which the NH Department of Safety admits that Police chiefs have abused their power when it comes to discriminating against legal gun owners requesting pistol revolver licenses. The word used with regard to the abuse of power is ‘Seldom.’ Yes, there is abuse but because it is infrequent, we’d rather not do anything to prevent it, and there is certainly no rush to end it.

Seldom. Infrequent. Not common. But present.

How’s-about we casually apply that logic to some other turns of phrase and see how that goes? What if we said, “Police chief’s wives are seldom abused by their husbands”? #CopsWivesMatter?

I read this and just shook my head slowly from side to side – I just couldn’t believe what I was reading.  Given this, why haven’t we all risen up in righteous indignation (er, if not a lot more) and say “no more” to taking more and more?  But at least one person did the right thing by voting…

Life in California — A Tax on a Tax

I just got a bill for some extra property tax I owe to a county in California.  The story behind it is sad and sort of hilarious.

A year or two ago I got billed in an audit for some “California use tax” on some golf carts we moved to California from Arizona.  I hadn’t thought I owed use tax on them because I paid sales tax in Arizona where I bought them.  But California sales tax is higher than that in Arizona (naturally) so I apparently owed use tax on the difference.  OK, I paid it.

Then, just recently, I was informed by one county in California that my property tax reports were wrong.

On Tuesday the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held a public hearing on Senate Bill 336. This is the bill that will end almost 100 years of state-sanctioned discrimination by issuers of pistol/revolver licenses. What’s truly interesting about the testimony submitted to the committee is that the Department of Safety (DoS) actually admits that discriminatory practices do indeed happen in New Hampshire.

I was killing some time the other night after cleaning up some backlog on the DVR and decided to see how bad the new Odd Couple was before I slipped away to play Fallout 4. It’s awful, and it is either Matthew Perry’s fault or it is mine.

He looks like he is acting. He sounds like he is acting. Everything his character does appears like acting. There is no suspension of disbelief for me. It was 20 minutes of Matthew Perry doing bad Middle School theater as Oscar Madison.

To be fair, I am willing to admit it might just be me.
