Specifically, the elites who endlessly blather on about ‘our democracy’ claim that it is threatened by Donald Trump and his supporters, so that ‘our democracy’ can only be safe if 74 million voters are effectively disenfranchised.

And these people who want the rest of us to believe that the United States is a democracy really are totalitarians trying to redefine what the US is.  We are a Constitutional/Representative Republic that uses democratic processes to elect those representatives and NOT a Democracy.  Our Founding Fathers studied history and saw that almost every democracy fell into totalitarianism in one fashion or another.
