Heartbroken in Croydon

At most of the school board meetings that have followed the recent right-sizing of Croydon’s school budget, at least one parent has expressed a thought that simply breaks my heart:

I get the idea that if kids learn to read, they can teach themselves by reading, but that won’t work for my kid.

These aren’t the parents of ‘special needs’ children, by the way.  These are parents of normal school children, as are the parents who invariably applaud these statements.

I can’t help but wonder:  What would it be like to be the child of parents who have so little faith in you?  Or the parent of a child in whom you have so little faith?
