I’ve known Patrick almost as long as GraniteGrok has been around. He even linked to us when he had CrushKerry.com (now defunct but the domain is for sale for $2,495). Doug, Pat, and I even had a radio show called Meet The New Press. So, we know each other.
He went from being a blogger to a new media consultant and now a political operator with Hynes Communications. Good on him. So we have “history.”
He also seems to be a regular on the Union Leader Editorial / Opinion page and this past Sunday was no different with his “For Mowers, this time it’s personal” column. From my perspective, it was mostly a fluff piece. That’s fine – it’s on the UL for accepting it. Couldn’t ask for something better from Hynsie’s standpoint – make Mowers look more human. It’s his job, after all.
I’m not going all that fluff but I did notice a big absence in the recounting. Correctly, he mentions that Matt worked in Trump’s State Department – but incorrectly leaves something that I remember to be wrong:
For Mowers, who served in the State Department under President Donald Trump, the biggest challenge right now is national security and “protecting American lives both here and abroad.”
See what Hynsie did there? He made it look like Matt Mowers work directly under President Donald Trump. Not bad as Matt is calling himself the Trumpiest of the growing crowd running for US Congress this cycle. But I will point out he didn’t – from what I remember he worked for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, not Donald Trump. So did EnviroPolitics:
I would say that Karoline Leavitt also can lay such a claim as well (having worked in the White House Press Office) and is also stumping for that same seat.
I also remember that Matt worked for Chris Christie as well – and so did New Jersey Globe:
Christie was a Trumper…until he wasn’t. And still is not exactly a supporter (to put it mildly). But Matt, if you remember, did run Christie’s Presidential race here in NH first. I forget where I read it but the NH MSM reported that Matt has already had a fund raiser in NJ. Given the above, that’s to be expected. But that number is wrong – a little birdie, at the time, told me that a second unreported trip also happened to back down to NJ.
I’m not blaming Mowers for all this in the column – Pat, however? Full Disclosure is always better than obfuscation. And this time, it left a different nuance than what I remember.
