Coach Brad Keyes took a stand against making kids wear masks while competing in track and field events. He got fired and that story went national. He says things have calmed down a bit but believes it needs to stay in front of folks or nothing will get done about it.
He’s got that right and explains it all in some detail in this interview with WSMN’s Liz Gabert. Liz shared the audio with me so I could share it with Y’all (that’s how she’d say it) and I’m eager to do that.
Coach Keyes’ message is as important now as it was a month ago when this journey started. Political policy decisions are creating a dangerous operating environment in high school sports and no one wants to take responsibility.
Coach Keyes explains that this particular mandate came down from the NHIAA but it has no enforcement powers and it’s only a suggestion. School boards exclaim that they must comply (not at all true) while schools and coaches announce as their excuse that everyone else is doing it so they must.
