There is no better time to run for mayor of New York than now. Bill de Blasio is less liked than usual, and his mishandling of COVID19 (alongside Cuomo) makes him easy pickings for someone with the resources and the message. Andrew Yang thinks he might be that guy.
Yang ran for the Democrat nomination for president and developed something of a cult following but not much more. He dropped out in early February after the New Hampshire Primary.
As for policy, he was about run-of-the-mill far-left, likes how China runs things, redistribute other people’s income to pay a living wage, which is to say not good for free markets and capitalism.
As for the Mayor’s race, there are reportedly 40 likely candidates for the job. Everyone from the Founder of the Guardian Angels to Rappers, Borough Presidents, Social Justice Professors, Tech and Finance execs, and a slew of city officials.
And Andrew Yang, maybe, probably.
The paperwork does not guarantee that Yang is running, and he so far has no campaign contributions. A source close to Yang told CBS News that these steps are “just procedural” and no decision has been made, but added Yang is “seriously considering it and this was the necessary next step.”
And he leads this pile of potentials in recent polling.
The only question remaining is, why the hell would we care? In particular, New York and NYC account for a significant number of COVID19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. De Blasio and Cuomo grotesquely mismanaged it.
New Yorkers deserve better. We all do. Though I’m not certain I see a”better” in the list of candidates, most of whom have no shot at winning or bringing the Big Apple back from the brink. Mostly because the winner will be another Democrat, and that’s not how they roll.
Yang has been named a potential nominee for a Biden Administration Secretary of Commerce if it comes to that.
