Nashua Aldermen Disrespecting Residents

by
Op-Ed

Mayor, I was listening to the Board of Aldermen meeting last evening, and I was dismayed that Aldermen Skip Cleaver took it upon himself to omit words to the Pledge of Allegiance.  Aldermen Cleaver decided to drop the words UNDER GOD.

The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an expression of allegiance to the flag of the United States and the Republic of the United States of America.

I am patriotic and passionate about our pledge because so many men and women sacrificed and died defending us. Why do some Aldermen feel the need to omit those words? Do they understand the emotion it can create in those who believe that the written words should not be altered?

I went back to review other Board of Aldermen meetings and found that Alderwomen Jan Schmidt also feels that she can modify the Pledge of Allegiance.  These are not the type of people Nashua residents want to represent them.

This is not a freedom of speech issue. This is about a pledge that many of our military personnel gave their lives for and are still giving their lives for.   When you disrespect the flag, you are disrespecting every person who lost their lives defending it. If you cannot read the Pledge as it has been adopted, then please do not read it at all.
