Sealed Indictments, Unsealed – Democrat Arrested on 28 Counts: Fraud and Corruption

A member of the Massachusetts State House is getting charged with embezzling campaign funds, as well as bank and tax fraud. Democrat State Rep. David Nangle has been arrested by the FBI (with agents from the IRS) on over a dozen acts of fraud and corruption.

According to the unsealed 28-count indictment, the Democratic politician purportedly conducted a scheme that began in 2014 that allowed him to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from his campaign, a bank and the IRS to make personal purchases and to cover his gambling habit.

Nagle has been in the Mass Legislature since 1999.

It is further alleged that Nangle, who was heavily in debt, gambled extensively at area casinos and online, and then used thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for various personal expenses such as dues at a local golf club, rental cars to travel to casinos, flowers for his girlfriend, gas, hotels, and restaurants.

He is alleged to have used his campaign debit card for all sorts of illegal personal purchases and then filing false reports to hide the unauthorized spending.

Nangle, 59, of Lowell, was indicted on 10 counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, nine counts of making false statements to a bank and five counts of filing false tax returns. Nangle was arrested this morning and will appear in federal court in Boston this afternoon.

I expect the US Attorney has their ducks in a row, and Mr. Nagle will find himself spending at least some of the estimated 30-years he could get in Federal prison.

The next question? Remember when we reported on the over 179,000 sealed criminal indictments waiting to be opened? Swamp cleaning from sea to shining sea. Nagle appears to account for 28 of them (probably). An appetizer.

Could there be a few high ranking Congressional Democrats on that list?  Here’s to hoping.
