This little clip at WMUR was brought to my attention: “Business owners get advice from Facebook on how to succeed on social media“. When I went traipsing over to see what it was, there she was – bright and cheery:
Related: Berniece Van Der Berg (Co-Founder of the Moonlight Meadery) called Al Baldasaro a “Predator?
The video can be seen here (WMUR doesn’t allow for embedded video) but at least they put up the written transcript of the clip and here’s her parts:
MANCHESTER, N.H. —Financial analysts say the average American shopper will spend $700 this holiday season, and if local businesses want to extract every possible penny, social media can extend their reach. Moonlight Meadery co-founder Berniece Van Der Berg said that when the Londonderry business tapped its first barrel in 2010, one thing was clear.
“Everything is connected to social media of some kind,” she said.
Well, she got THAT right – just not quite in all the connections she thought about.
Van Der Berg said she realized advertising didn’t require money if she had access to devices that everyone keeps in the palm of their hands. “Any time we come out with a new product, we use social media to highlight that particular product,” she said.
All KINDS of advertising, my dear, and not all of it complimentary to your mission. That is unless you are a believer in that old Hollywood saying that “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” Well, ma’am, I think you bought your publicity in spades because you’ve presented so much of it to us.
Given the mashup that she has done to bring her to our attention (over and over again), I do have to wonder: did she REALLY pay attention in class to the parts that said: “and, oh please God, don’t do THESE kinds of stuff online!!!”.
“We post social stories, as they call them, so we try to engage our particular audience into the look, the feel, the emotional part, and that’s where visual comes in a lot,” Van Der Berg said. “Video plays a big, big role.”
Other recommendations for small businesses include don’t leave the “about” section blank, definitely tailor organic posts to the audience and don’t post too often.
Apparently those last two parts, she missed. But she certainly “engaged” our attention, right?
