[Updated] Dartmouth College, Free Speech, and What the…

Dartmouth_College

[Updated below] US Senate candidate Corky Messner was scheduled to speak at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.  But the title of the talk triggered the snowflakes who (apparently) threatened violence at the mere prospect. (Dartmouth receives significant amounts of taxpayer dollars.)

Related: Obama, Democrats, and DACA Created the Opioid Crisis

The discussion was titled, “Building a Wall Against Drugs: The Need for Border Security to End the Opioid Crisis.”

I’ve been writing about that relationship since early 2018. The two topics are inseparable because one, the opening of the border by Barack “Pen and Phone” Obama, correlates directly with the other.

Even the majority of the fentanyl or its precursors from China come up through our Southern border to poison our kids and kill our loved ones. An issue you’d think college kids would want to discuss.

Nope.

Two words. Border Security. Triggered!

The College Republicans who hosted the event say they had to cancel it.

I’d like to hear from New Hampshire Democrats and Senator Shaheen in particular. Messner is in a Republican primary to challenge her. A sitting US Senator should not only refuse to tolerate an atmosphere of fear that prevents candidates from freely expressing ideas before an audience she should speak against this sort of intimidation.

Directly to the Dartmouth, Democrats, administrators, and Left-wing activists and the people of New Hampshire.

But the only media I can find on Shaheen and Dartmouth are events where she speaks (without security threats) or announcements about how she helped give them your money.

She has bragged about securing at least 1.4 Million of your tax dollars for Dartmouth (here and here) in just the last two years.

Shaheen even had the nerve to hold a talk there about Russian influence on upcoming elections

“These are deeply disturbing attacks,” Shaheen said during her remarks, “and one reason why the Kremlin is emboldened is because there has been no serious pushback from the U.S. and certainly not from our president.”

So, you are concerned with Interference and pushback? Even if we pretend the left’s false narrative on Russia and Trump is real, put our money where your mouth is Senator Shaheen!

If Dartmouth Students, Faculty, and administrators cannot keep the student population from infringing on the free speech rights of political opponents that institution should not be receiving any taxpayer money.

And until such time as College Republicans and their speakers can engage in discourse on campus without constant interruptions, disruptions, or threats and intimidation tactics from your intolerant electorate, you’d best stop sending our money to Dartmouth.

It might actually be a good idea for you to publicly block it. No campus should receive tax dollars while free speech rights are being infringed.

If that is beyond you then it is clearly time for a New Senator from New Hampshire, and look! We just happen to have an opportunity to do that this November!

And Congresswoman Kuster, you are on the hook as well. Hanover is in your district and you have bragged about securing tax dollars for Dartmouth as well. We expect you to not just speak out but to use your “influence” to correct this unconstitutional injustice.

[Updated]  Looks like there is a mess and a lot of misunderstanding surrounding this story over at Dartmouth. The College Republicans have some communications issues, at the very least.

While the folks hosting the Messner event still claim there were security concerns it’s not clear why. And while two leaders of the Dartmouth Republicans have resigned the group still claims there is no connection to the accusation that there were threats.

I’m not inclined to believe them. Not yet. In other words, it sounds like they were being snowflakes.

I also feel obligated to include a statement by the Dartmouth College Democrats regarding the reports to date and their stated stance on Free speech.

The College Democrats have denied knowledge of any threats made against the event and condemned any violence.

“The Dartmouth Democrats have no knowledge of threats of violence against Mr. Messner or the Dartmouth College Republicans, and under no circumstance would we condone any,” College Democrats executive director Michael Parsons ’20 wrote in an email statement. “We condemn the racist rhetoric propagated by the event, and support the right to free speech by all parties involved, including those who were planning peaceful protests.”

We are encouraged by these remarks and hope that continues to prove true.

Everyone from campus faculty, students, local leaders, and members of Congress need to be both aware of free speech issues on campus and prepared to defend speech. Far too many incidents have made stories like this appear credible.

Add with the too numerous to mention fake hate hoaxes the climate for debate has suffered.

This incident looks like an anti-free speech hoax. We’re happy to label it that as things continue to develop.

But we continue to support the idea that Colleges that do not do enough to ensure the peaceful exchange of ideas, even those with which we disagree, should have any federal dollars cut or clawed back until they can demonstrate a commitment to protecting the peaceful expression of opinions.

Thanks to Paul Phillips, care of Twitter, for the Dartmouth piece.
