Leak Suggests Infections and Deaths from Coronavirus in China Many Times Higher than ‘Official’ Reports

We have been sharing the “official” number of infections and deaths from the novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) on our Facebook page. Every morning. And we’ve reported on how experts claim those numbers are too low. Well, we may now know just howtoo low.”

“…the WSJ itself reported in late January, China was explicitly manipulating the casualty number by listing pneumonia as the cause of death instead of coronavirus. Subsequent reports that Wuhan officials were rushing to cremate coronavirus casualties before they could be counted did not add to the credibility of the official data.

But the biggest hit to the narrative and China’s officially reported epidemic numbers came overnight, when a slip up in China’s TenCent may have revealed the true extent of the coronavirus epidemic on the mainland. And it is nothing short than terrifying.

That’s the screengrab at the top of the page. These are the numbers (from Feb 2 -2020)

  • 154,203 confirmed infections.
  • 79,800 suspected (unconfirmed)
  • 269 cured
  • 24,589 Dead

Compare that to the “official” numbers provided by the online infection tracker this morning.

The actual numbers today would be a lot higher and much higher than the experts guess that by the end of this week, we’d be at over 300,000 cases by this Friday.

We have no way to confirm or deny the leak. China is not likely to provide any affirmations. But virologists’ guesstimates are a good deal closer to the leaked numbers than the ones being reported as official.

We can say that the CDC data appears to be legitimate. There are 11 confirmed cases in the US as of this morning.
