Conservatism comes from our belief about human nature. Conservatism has been and continues to be extremely vilified by the media and academia. The participants in those occupations, media and academia, are generally speaking leftists. How much more leftist are they than conservative?
Well, they about ten times more leftists in those occupations than there are conservatives. It makes getting a balanced view from them problematic.
Because of their positions the spin on stories or lessons, we and our children get, come from leftists. Conservatives are often scoffed at. Friends and detractors often ask us to explain our horrible, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal, racist, bigoted, backward thinking, whack job views. If you are conservative you know that is how the question comes to you.
When we calmly and rationally do so, reasonable people often startle. You get a response like, that doesn’t sound so unreasonable at all. They actually agree with a lot of what they hear. So what are our core beliefs? Let’s start with small government and free enterprise.

Why do we like small government? The first thing you need to understand is a conservative does not believe human nature can fundamentally change. This really is the basis for conservatism in general. We do not think people are perfectible. It is not a case of if only we could make the right set of laws and rules. We believe people, like every other creature on earth, are motivated by their own self-interest.
Many people see the belief that conservatives have; people are fundamentally flawed, selfish and unchangeable as cynical and pessimistic. On the contrary, it is this belief which generates a society with the checks and balances against the natural human dastardliness that basically wants to tell other people what to do.
These checks and balances prevent the accumulation of too much power in the hands of too few people. The defiance of these checks and balances by the current political class is the real threat we the people are responding against. All you have to do is open a history book with the most basic sense of fairness.
