In the aftermath of the Holocaust, many well-intentioned people around the world wondered how it could have happened. And the question for our time is could something like it ever happen again?
Shortly after World War II ended, the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) penned the following now well-known poetic piece about the cowardice of German intellectuals and certain clergy (including, by his own admission, himself) following the Nazis’ rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group:
First, they came for the Communists,
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Communist;
Then they came for the Socialists,
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists,
And I did not speak out, because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews,
And I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me,
And there was no one left to speak out for me.
Although Jews remain targets of hate as they have been for centuries, modern times call for modern groups of “villains,” and the radical left has now found and focused on new targets: Christians and Christianity.
