Public Trust in the Media is Now Lower than Public Trust in the US Congress

Your first thought at reading this headline is probably a sarcastic “No S**t, Really?” We’re right there with you. But this is from the Columbia Journalism Review. And their recent pollfound that the media is at the bottom of the list of institutions in which the public has trust.”

Behind Congress? Yes!

Press Confidence at all time low

Here’s another “No S**t, Really” poll result. Democrats have higher confidence than anyone else. And 42% of them believe the main-stream media is not biased. But only 42%.

There are a few other yummy tidbits. Pick a generation or geographic preference and the majority has lost confidence in the media.

Media Confidence by generation

And if you are looking for what I would consider an unexpected poll result, try this one. Based on religion, only Hindus have High confidence in the folks running the mainstream media. No other religion has much confidence in the Media.  Although Muslims and Jews have more than most it is not enough to outweigh the lack of confidence expressed by these groups.

It’s an eye-opening survey.

Plenty of graphs to chew on if you are into that, here.  But the 30,000-foot view does not get any prettier.

People have more confidence in Congress than in the press. And I predict the Media will do nothing to make that better.
