Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cake Shop Defeats the Colorado Civil Rights Commission Again

Owner Jack Phillips of the Masterpiece cake shop won his case at the US Supreme Court. They found that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) was not all that civil. Not to him. No to his faith. But that didn’t stop the Commission from pursuing a second action, even after the SCOUT ruling.

As reported last August, Phillips was repeatedly targeted by a liberal lawyer even though there is a bakery across the street and more than a dozen others in town. Phillips refused to make a cake celebrating her transition. Blue on the outside, pink on the inside.

Autumn Scardina, the lawyer, filed a discrimination complaint.

The CCRC waited until the SCOTUS ruling then charged Phillips. Phillips sued the head of the commission for 100,000.00 for discrimination.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission dismissed administrative action against Phillips, and the Christian baker, represented by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), withdrew his federal court case against the state Tuesday afternoon. ADF claims the state dropped the case after evidence was presented that showed “ongoing hostility” toward religious freedom.

The Commission insists religion was never mentioned in their charge. But we can see the discrimination clearly from here. Civil Rights Commissions exist to validate certain forms of discrimination as acceptable -at least until you take them to court. But why does it have to come to that?

Because many folks will not have the wherewithal, time or resources to take anyone to court. These facades allow the state to promote discrimination at the behest of activist lawyers or special interests. That is why we must oppose them. They were not created to ensure equality or diversity. They exist to narrow the scope of words and ideas allowed in public spaces.

Jack Phillips has gone two rounds with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. He just won the second one. They dropped the charge and he dropped his lawsuit. What are the odds there will be a round three?
