Sales of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” Soar – Listener Polling Drives Stations to Drop Ban

Radio stations pressured to drop the holiday classic Baby It’s Cold Outside are doing an about-face. Sales of the single soared after word got out that some stations had pulled the song.  Local listener polling showed overwhelming support for the tune. It’s not creepy. This isn’t some date-rape scenario. It’s an innocent flirty standard from a different era.

In other words, originalism won out.

The context mattered.

No one puts Baby” in a corner

The KDAT 104.5 Ceder Rapids brand Manager observed that,

“…(many) understand the difference between the flirty playful nature of the lyrics and harmful manipulation. Most would agree that this song’s lyrical intention was not originally meant to be interpreted as creepy or manipulative.”

A station in San Francisco saw 77% percent support for the song and put it back in the rotation.  KOSI in Denver got 95% percent support in their poll.

In our original look at the trend to drop the song, we noted that “Other stations should expect to be confronted with mob pressure to unplug this from their playlist.” They were. But many took the time to poll all their listeners not just the ones who were complaining.

There’s a lesson in there for everyone. The SJW’s are a vocal minority. But you already knew that, didn’t you.
