The next great Supreme Court case on Gun rights may be brewing in an unusual place. The police chief in the city of Republic, Washington has stepped up to announce that recent unconstitutional laws passed by Washington State voters will not apply in his city as long as he’s the Chief.

“The second amendment says the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. As long as I am Chief of Police, no Republic Police Officer will infringe on a citizens right to keep and Bear Arms, PERIOD!”
What is he protecting his citizens from?
Initiative 1639, which goes into effect Jan. 1, The Spokesman-Review reported. The sweeping gun-control measure includes raising the age limit for buying semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21 and requiring buyers of those weapons to pass an enhanced background check, show proof of firearms-training and complete a 10-day waiting period before obtaining the weapon.
Republic didn’t start the trend
Back in May, we reported on a handful of counties in Illinois that refused to enforce laws banning bump stocks, restricting magazine sizes, and prohibited purchases by adults under the age of twenty-one.
With all these sanctuary cities, we just decided to turn it around to protect our Second Amendment rights,” said David Campbell, vice chairman of the Effingham County Board. He said at least 20 Illinois counties and local officials in Oregon and Washington have asked for copies of Effingham County’s resolution.
HotAir reports that more than 25 counties in Western Illinois have become sanctuary counties. They protect the individual right to self-defense in response to State laws that infringe on the second amendment. I have not heard whether any court cases have been filed, but they seem inevitable. And while lower courts have been unpredictable, the Supreme Court has been a more reliable friend in recent years.
Have You Heard the One About 9 Unelected Lawyers?
How nine unelected lawyers might view the circumstances in the context of the state laws and the US Constitution is still anyone’s guess. And while we shouldn’t have to go through all of this (what part of shall not be infringed do you not understand?), the left will never stop trying to disarm us.
Thankfully, there are still mayors, police chiefs, and even counties willing to step up for their residents to lead the fight. Not that any one of us wouldn’t take up the mantle if came down to that.
