There is a very healthy and necessary discussion taking place on Facebook over why Marilinda Garcia may not be a Libertarian-enough congressional candidate for some of the Libertarian’s in New Hampshire. They are concerned about her positions as a state rep on Gay Marriage, marijuana, abortion, junk like that. But it never occurred to anyone (that I saw–and apologies if I missed it) to ask the question that answers all those questions.
So I pointed that out for them.
If these one or two (or however many) issues are such a problem for you with regard to Garcia, why don’t you ask her if she thinks they are a states rights issue? If, as a more Conservative Constitutional candidate, she rightly believes the questions that concern you are not matters for the Feds to debate becasue the Constitution does not empower them to do so, that’s the only issue you need concern yourself with.
If Marilinda is an actual Constitutional Conservative and intends to vote as one, she would work to shift power back to the states where it belongs. To vote against things that are not powers delegated to the federal government. So, her personal positions on all those pesky social issues that these libertarians are concerned with would be of no concern.
The proper role of a congressional representative is meant to be far different from that of a state legislator. State reps should have more power over a wider range of issues. They are charged with handling all the things for which the Federal Constitution was never meant. So, someone who chooses to go to DC is (technically) embracing less power and yet more responsibility. They are responsible for protecting the rights of states from abuse by the general government. They are tasked with preventing new abuses and finding ways to roll back existing ones to return the authority to where it rightly belongs–in state capitals and local municipalities.
Modern libertarians do not have a monopoly on this idea. “Tenthers” are as old as an Amendment written and ratified by people whose moral and Christian character and Judeo-Christian values (on a wide range of social issues) would prevent modern libertarians from ever voting for them at all.
How’s that for perspective?
But they are right to be concerned. We all should be, about every candidate, but one should not bite off lady liberties nose to spite her face.
Now, I’m not in NH CD-2. I will not cast a vote in that primary or in the General. But I will share my policy concerns, and I will act as a voice for a redistribution of authority back to the states and the people. The current Rep from CD-2 is Ann Kuster who would just as soon take my camera, swear at me, call me names, use the government to spy on me, intimidate me, and silence me as take my advice.
Marilinda Garcia would at least listen.
Does that mean she won’t succumb to the Georgetown Flu and turn native on us? There are few guarantees in life. But you are guaranteed to miss 100% of the shots you never take. We need to slow, stall or stop the progressive consumption of our nation before we can no longer undo the damage.
So ask her the question?
Marilinda? Will you work in Congress to defer power back to the states on issues, social issues in particular, that are not delegated by the US Constitution or to the General government?
