The most important principle for designing an ethical society is to make sure that everyone’s reputation is on the line all the time, so that bad behavior will always bring bad consequences.

IMHO, much of the problem that we see in Society nowadays is that Progressives embarked on a long trip to insulate everyone from bad consequences. In that, they have denied people the freedom to learn from their mistakes. Shame, stigma; practice of those two are to be avoided, as everyone is a victim in one way or another is the mantra of the Left (unless, of course, one is a Conservative, TEA Party, or Free Stater – “fire at will” is then their mantra. Proving, once again, of course, the hypocrisy of the Left as well).
Bad Consequences ARE a needed part of a free society – while we learn by others’ mistakes, we learn better and faster when we do the nose plants ourselves. In preventing that experience from happening, the Progressives reveal themselves as the true Nanny Staters.
Which should be feared MUCH more than Free Staters – the latter want to be left alone and the freedom for you to be left alone if that is what you want. The Nanny Progressives continually wish to FORCE you to be part of their group and follow their regulations, regardless if you want to or not.
So, who demonstratively wishes the best for you? Freedom or “their way (there is no highway)”?
