Congratulations to Mitt Romney on winning the endorsement of Senator McCain. McCain’s endorsement nearly nails down the support of two parts of the Republican party. McCain represents the Republican establishment that believes Republicans must not mention Obama’s failings, believes that Obama cannot be defeated, and fears a Conservative candidate more than the re-election of Obama because a Conservative would reduce the establishment’s power. (One wonders if Romney will take campaign advice from these people? That would enable Romney to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.) McCain also represents the bi-polar wing of the Repubican party, people that occasionally vote conservatively, but whose only consistency is a commitment to political correctness and lack of commitment to traditional Republican principles.
One wonders whether the endorsement of McCain will increase or decrease Romney voters. I think most of the people who would be positively influenced by a McCain endorsement already support Romney. Most Republicans I know had trouble voting for McCain in 2008. We did so holding our nose because we feared Obama and had a tiny amount of hope that possibly McCain would be influenced by Palin.
The McCain endorsement almost completely solidifies the Republican establishment endorsement for Romney. All that remains to nail this down would be endorsements from Senators Graham, Lugar, Snowe, and Collins. Will these endorsements be forthcoming? Who knows, these Senators might “stand on their principles” and wait to see if Obama makes a better offer for their endorsement.
