Quick Thought: Necessary groveling?

by

NH’s Governor John Lynch, Democrat, just had his inauguration for a historic 4th term (never done before).  The Concord Monitor had the headline:

Lynch Stresses Bipartisanship

Ya think?  Actually, two thoughts:

  • Er, does he really have much of a choice?
  • Headline objectivity on the part of the paper?

First, given that the Republicans have a veto-proof margin in the NH House, a veto-proof margin in the Senate, and no Democrat fellow-travellers in the Executive Council, he’d better start stressing bipartisanship.

And he will be a "bipartisanship of one" – it will be he that will have to bridge the gap, unless the Republican leadership turns a paternalistic eye in his direction like a one might do with a year-old puppy ("C’mon, Spot, let’s go for a ride." )

Second – the paper,  known as "Pravda on the Merrimac" is widely seen as a rather liberal.  Rarely does it seem to stray from a Progressive ("moderate" Progressive"?) view (although from time to time, I am surprised).  Was the headline written to put as shiny a face on a real dismal political outlook for their favorite political party?
