So Kids, What Did We Learn From Thursday’s House Session (09/15/22)?

We learned it was “Veto Day” and the last session of this legislative body until after election day and new legislators are sworn in. The opening ceremonies included a memorial to Rep. Mary Griffin, who passed away recently, and prayers for Rep. Gary Hopper who is fighting cancer. There were also many thanks to those who have served the House and will not be returning and those who did not make it through their primaries last Tuesday.

We learned that Rep. Mike Yakubovich (R-Hooksett) is not only a talented legislator, but is a talented musician as well, and he played the Star Spangled Banner for us today as we opened our session.

We learned that Rep. Mike Yakubovich (R-Hooksett) has a son named Max that can really sing a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. We also learned that Rep. Gary Hopper (R-Weare) has been doing well with chemo treatments and was able to join us for Wednesday’s House session and was greeted by the House with a much deserved standing ovation.

We learned that today was Tartan Day at the NH House. This is a celebration of Scottish heritage in NH and gave our State Representatives a chance to “show our plaid.” Many reps wore some sort of plaid, including the NH plaid.

We learned that between 9 am and 10:00 pm (lunch and dinner break included) we were able to vote on around 71 House bills, and pass some really great things for the people of NH. House members truly earned their princely sum of $200 just with this grueling day alone.

We learned that 400 legislators (along with House staff) can fit comfortably, socially distanced, in the Manchester DoubleTree Expo Center and get important work done, despite difficult acoustics. Well, at least the Senate is utilizing the newly, and beautifully, renovated Reps Hall in Concord.
