Heh! “Iowans pick corn, New Hampshire picks Presidents”

Heh! A Slap in the Face, Craig?  Really?  Iowans have THAT thin of a skin?

I have been fortunate to have been asked to be a part of Tony Katz’s "The Conversation" (here and here) the last couple of months to yak about the 2012 Republican Presidential Primary to represent NH’s viewpoint.  Joining me has been Craig Robinson, founder and Editor-in-chief of the The Iowan Republican, for the perspective of Iowans.

Well, it seems that Craig got a bit cranky (heh!) over the fact that Gov. Rick "Is he in or is he gonna be on the sideline?" Perry is announcing (maybe?) his intentions at the RedState Gathering on Saturday:

Texas Governor Rick Perry’s decision to announce his candidacy in South Carolina at the same time the Iowa Straw Poll is taking place in Ames is not only a slap in the face to Republican voters in Iowa, but it also is disrespectful to the Iowa GOP and the other candidates seeking the nomination.

The move makes it obvious that Governor Perry either doesn’t understand the Iowa caucuses or doesn’t respect the role that Iowa plays in the nominating process.  We shouldn’t be surprised.  The candidate he endorsed for president in 2008, Rudy Giuliani, never could figure out Iowa either.

The road map to the nomination for Perry is very simple.  If he wins Iowa and South Carolina, he’s probably the nominee.  His decision to announce his candidacy in a manner that attempts to pull some of the spotlight away from Ames and the Iowa caucuses will not sit well with Iowa activists.

I beg to differ (but with a smile and not a whine, for while we in NH are taciturn outside, we’re rather mischievous inside)!  The path to the nomination lies NOT lie with Iowa but with New Hampshire (but I readily admit that Iowa has great corn for Orville Redenbacher, though)  And frankly, if Gov. Perry wants to schmooze with Erick Erickson and the other RedStaters, and then head straight to NH well, we’re dandy with that. We are, after all, clearly comfortable with our role as The First in the Nation Primary State, where the people are as solid as the granite rock we stand on (as opposed to that Iowan corn that sways in even the gentlest breeze).  We know that the candidates have spent a LOT of time here and are only visiting you folks, Craig, for just the littlest time but then they’ll be right back here to spend weeks with us (and Mom loved me more too!)! 

Further, I’m rather doubtful that ANY of the other candidates are sitting in the corners of their respective hotel rooms, misty eyed…

Let our government leaders debate

U.S. Representative Thad McCotter may be a name you don’t know very well, and part of the reason is because of the sort of media bias recently displayed by Fox News. A recent article on the economic crisis suggested that Wall Street credit rating agencies relish exercising their power to tinker with the U.S. economy, because of the influence it gives them over the political process. Think about it – the entire U.S. Congress, the President, every television station and newspaper have been unable to talk about anything other than the U.S. economy and the government’s response over the last two weeks. And the major issue has never been about default – we were never in any real danger of a bona fide default – it  was about whether these Wall Street agencies have faith in the U.S. government. I’d say that’s exerting a fair amount of influence over the political process.

In much the same way, “big media,” as we might call it, has figured out that it can exert a significant amount of influence over the most significant political contest in our country, the race for the Presidency. This is not a new phenomenon. Ron Paul was excluded from a debate in his previous run for President, Gary Johnson was excluded from the last CNN debate in New Hampshire, and now U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter may be excluded from the Iowa GOP/Fox News debate, where he appears on the Ames Straw Poll ballot, and spent $18,000 for his inclusion in both the debate and straw poll.

Where is the outrage?

You know, we’ve been warned several times by China that we had to get our financial house in order over the last year or so as the Obama Administration (and prior Administrations) have spent, spent some more, and then spent us almost into default.

Even a Communist country does not want to waste its money, and certainly they have a lot of theirs invested in a lot of ours.  The update from China’s official Xinhau news agency agency on Saturday released this statement about the credit downgrade:

"The U.S. government has to come to terms with the painful fact that the good old days when it could just borrow its way out of messes of its own making are finally gone."

I’m of the age where much of my life was spent pre-1989, the year that the Wall was brought down in Germany, signaling the end of the Cold War.  We spent decades and trillions of dollars fighting Communism; now, our political leaders have to be lectured by more Communists on how to be a good capitalist Government?  How utterly humiliating is it to be scolded over our lack of fiscal discipline by Communist China.
