Few Americans are eager to mix politics and turkey this Thanksgiving. A mere 15 percent are looking forward to having political discussions, while 40 percent hope to avoid talking about politics over Thanksgiving dinner. There are still 45 percent who don’t care either way…Thirty-seven percent of Republicans and 40 percent of Democrats wish to avoid political discussions this Thanksgiving — a somewhat rare instance of partisan agreement. Forty-two percent of Independents said that they hope to avoid politics.
This year it won’t be a “problem” as the Eldest and his family have ventured south to have Thanksgiving with the Daughter-in-Law’s family this year. Thus, TMEW, the Grandson, and I will be heading to the local “Turkey Farm” restaurant for our meal (depending on the cold because it’s first come, first served and there’s generally a line out the door for a couple of hours – thankfully they normally put up a large heated tent for the waiting overflow). So, no other family to “upset”.
Sure, if someone starts the discussion, I’m all in for taking part and would regardless of the consternation of others. After all, politics has inserted itself, like it or not, into every nook and cranny of our lives and it will remain so until we decided that enough is enough – shrink the power of government and that will all go away to a large degree. Why?
If we can “retreat” government, then the need to have “politics 24/365” is no longer needed – and then just the personal (and no longer “the politics is the personal”) is left. Believe it or not, I’d be happy about that. I turned to politics ONLY because I finally discovered that too many people were making FAR too many decisions about how I and my family were to live. If “they” would stop, so would I.
And that’s a promise. Problem is, too many people believe it is their Divine Right to continue to be busybodies and the equivalent of junior high hall monitors with all of the self-righteousness of hellfire and brimstone preachers. At least with the latter, at least you can get up and leave.
With the former, they get up and leave – to follow you to continue their hectoring.
I’m betting that they didn’t expect, in doing so, to get GraniteGrok staring back at them.
