Number Poems

I neglected to share this, but on the first day of school this year my 5th grader’s first homework assignment in math was a math poem.  Using numbers in a poem.   That was the Math homework that day.  Use numbers….to make a poem.  

I think That I shall Never see,
A thing as lovely as a Three.

 Why not Shakespeare?

2B or not 2B, that is the question…

 How about civics?

4 score and 7 years ago our 4 fathers…

What’s next?  "How does that equation make you feel as a person?"

That’s everyday Math.  And while I can concede that math is all around us, it hardly seems useful to waste a day of instruction on something that will not improve the ability to use math.

So this just sounds a bit like English to me…I’m sorry, Language Arts.
